Series: Alyx Rayer Chronicles #1
Publication date: October 10th 2012
Genre: Adult Paranormal Romance
Alyx Rayer’s existence in Atlanta, the eternally bustling capital of Georgia, is one of routine and blending in among the worker bees. But her ‘normal’ life is actually a façade for a higher calling; she’s a three hundred year old soul, encased in a human vessel and sent from the darkness between heaven and Earth to capture her Marked when summoned by her superiors.
During the initial, routine stake-out of her Marked, a dream prophet named Isaac Walsh, Alyx is thrown for an emotional loop when his allure captivates her heart from two rooftops away. The event marks the very instance when her sense of what’s right and what’s wrong is brutally challenged as her contact with him is strictly forbidden.
While already trapped between honor and desire, her emotional struggles are further challenged by a man in a black suit who continually pops up when she least expects it, his presence evoking a strange response from the scar she was branded with at birth. The scar tingles like a warning beacon, alerting her that something is amiss. Because her superiors never told her what this would mean, or much of anything except what to do when they summon, she can only conclude to try and keep her sanity, and her life, from completely shattering to pieces.
This engaging first book of the series is a Paranormal Romance novel interlaced with twists, turns, and thrilling suspense that is sure to satisfy readers of any genre.
My review: A mysterious girl stalks her ‘Marked’ target
Marked for Vengeance is about Alyx Rayer, a seemingly normal human working a day job and hanging out with her best friend Cinda. She is beautiful, smart and dates a rich, handsome doctor but she has a hazardous secret – spying on Isaac, a mysterious ‘painter man’ from a roof top at night. There’s more to Alyx than meets the eye, as she hides her strange scar on her shoulder and seems enraptured with the strange man. And so the journey of Alyx Rayer begins, as her life slowly falls apart and we gradually find out her purpose.
I loved the way the plot was revealed in this book. When we meet Alyx, we don’t know what to expect as she seems like she lives a normal life. Then strange cues pop up here and there about her stalking, her scar and calling Isaac her ‘Marked’. She also alludes to the fact that this may not be her first life time and she needs to do normal things to blend in, like date and hold a job. We don’t find out what Alyx is until the later half in the book, as the pace speeds up and we transition from Alyx the human, to stalker, to supreme being. The sense of mystery captivated me from the start and I couldn’t put this book down.
While not appropriate for the YA audience due to sex scenes and violence, the book is written in a first person YA style that is refreshing and easy to read. I read a particularly heavy book beforehand and this is exactly the type of read I was looking for, one that is entertaining, not a brain burner and a general good read. I would classify this as a dark NA fantasy, sort of similar to Angelfall in that it isn’t appropriate for the younger audience.
The point of view transitions between Alyx and Isaac as we delve into their lives. Isaac is a middle-aged widower whose sole mission is to raise his teenage son. He hasn’t dated ever since his wife passed away and upon stumbling into Alyx at the cafe where he works, he also feels a mutual attraction to this beautiful but strange girl. While there are traces of insta-love going on between the two, they have an interesting relationship to develop as Alyx’s ‘Marked’ target and also someone who she’s been stalking for a while.
The book speeds up towards the last half with a really interesting reveal. I don’t want to give away too much so that you can enjoy the plot for yourself, but I’m interested in seeing how this forbidden romance will continue in the next book, Tethered by Fate. Lucky I don’t have to wait a long time as it’s just been released!

My review: Sexy warrior angel or human prophet?
I was so hooked onto the first book that I had to go straight into the second. Tethered by Fate explores the fantasy aspects that were introduced in the first book, fully exploring Isaac’s prophet status, Alyx in her role as a protector angel, and the spirit guides that command the angel army. From the very first page, there’s a blooming romance between Isaac and Alyx, which is what I’ve been waiting for since the two met. It also introduces a whole new host of characters in the form of Protector Angels, Alyx’s kind and their elders and spirit guides.
From the very beginning, Alyx is dropped into a different dimension formed by her Elders where they have brought together the other Protectors. The Earth is under attack by invisible, monstrous beings commanded by the evil Serpious, and these angels are mankind’s last hope. I think the whole set up of the overarching war could have been done better, as we’re given an evil guy with a purpose but not much else surrounding that. There were so many new characters introduced that I began to lose track of who was who, especially when it came to the Elders and their accomplices but this didn’t really affect my enjoyment.
That’s because of this: Sexy Warrior Angels!!! Imagine, a sexy warrior angel that has been manufactured exactly for you, designed to suit your needs and cover your weaknesses. They compliment you in every way, have the brawn and the buff to take care of all the monsters while you stand back and protect and heal them. I was so excited about the concept that everything else took a back seat.
Next to the sexy warrior angels, we have Alyx and Isaac finding different companions that could be their match. It’s controversial for an angel to have relations with a human, so they have that to conquer here. Will they end up with their matched counterparts or will they be unable to resist the allure of a forbidden romance? You’ll have to read on to find out.
While I think the first one was a stronger title, I still enjoyed Tethered by Fate and eagerly wait for the third book to find out what happens. There’s a few twists and turns to be had here and I would recommend the series to paranormal fans.
