Chatterbox: PTALive Brisbane Event Recap: Fangirling over YA

April 11, 2014 by Jeann @ Happy Indulgence | Books, Chatterbox, Features

A chorus of fangirls, squealing along with you at YA books. The sales counter filled with books being snapped up like Boxing Day bargains. One excitable Felicity, the person behind Penguin Teen Australia, leading the charge with her passion over the latest YA releases.

PTA Live was an amazing event. It was great finding out about the latest and upcoming YA releases and meeting other book bloggers, fans, and readers, including those who I chat to everyday on Twitter. It’s not often that I fangirl over books with others in person, so it was a really awesome experience! Last year Brisbane’s first PTALive was held in Black Cat books but we had outgrown our venue and this one moved to an auditorium in the State Library. I was so proud to see so many people there with a passion for books!

I particularly appreciated how PTA pointed out that whether you are 14 or 40, you can still enjoy YA books. Being labelled as young adult books, they often have a stigma attached to it but in reality, more than 50% of the attendees were over 18.

ausyabloggersFelicity was an entertaining, funny and passionate presenter, she really hyped up the room as we squealed and screamed over the latest YA books. She even gave me a shout out and encouraged everyone to join the Australian YA Book Bloggers group which Kelly @ Divabooknerd, Brittany @ Nice Girls Read and I run. I had no idea how many of us were out there! Definitely join up if you’re an Aussie YA blogger, we’d love to meet you.

It was also exciting seeing our blog names displayed up on the screen!! My heart swelled with so much with pride! Check out these Brisbane based bloggers:

Here’s what was covered on the night:

PTA’s Top 5 Books – Side Effects May Vary, On the Jellicoe Road, Vampire Academy, The Fault in Our Stars, Anna and the French Kiss
Other Publishers Books We Love – Fangirl!! These Broken Stars!!
Other Books we want to Read
The Underrated
Upcoming Books for 2014

Penguin also announced the launch of Penguin Teen Australia TV which will be fortnightly vlogs! Can’t wait to see these. Other bits and pieces like the upcoming TFIOS and Divergent movies along with the latest obsession over the youtube remake, Emma Approved. I also enjoyed the Q&A at the end, so much excitement!

Upcoming releases I’m particularly excited for are Afterworlds by Scott Westerfield, Masquerade by Kylie Fornasier, Silver Shadows by Richelle Mead, and Popular by Maya Van Wagenen – I’m currently reading this, it was the free gift on the night and it’s excellent!

Here’s some photos from the night:

If you’re on the fence about going to PTALive in your local city, I definitely recommend it! I wish there were more of these events on, especially in Brisbane.

Thank you to Penguin Teen Australia for holding such a fantastic event, bringing YA lovers together, and publishing such awesome titles in Australia.

  1. Hi Jeann!

I'm Kylie Fornasier, the author of Masquerade. I'm delighted that you are excited about the release of Masquerade at the end of July. I'm so excited about it myself!

To thank you for being one of the book's first fans (not counting my wonderful family and friends who have to be fans), I'd love to send you a signed copy of Masquerade when it is released. If you'd like send me an email (or visit my website and fill in the contact form) with your postal address, I'll make sure you're one of the first people to read it.

    Thanks for your support!

    • Thanks Wendy, I don't think there's actually too many events here except for this one, and some book signings. I guess it depends where you are in the States. I wish we had those events here though!

  2. I'm so envious! You look so adorable and enjoying the event. Plus, your blog was included in the slideshow! I want to attend an event like this. Looks so much fun and you'll meet people with the same interest. We don't have that kind of event here in our country too but this month, I will be going to a book signing event. That will be my first because I'm not the type of person who have the patience to wait in line.

  3. Awww thank you so much Faye, it would be awesome meeting one day! I actually haven't had many book signings, and we get this event once a year! But yeah, you definitely have a huge YA fan crowd in the Phils. Thank you Faye!

  4. Awwww, Jeann <3 <# You look so adorable; I would love to hang out with you! You seem so fun to be with 🙂 I'm so jealous that you guys have events like this. Where I live, aside from three to four book signings a month, it's pretty quiet 🙁 Then again, there are no big publishing companies that have a base here, but they should reconsider considering they have SO MANY YA fans here 😉 Nice photos, I loved them!

  5. It looks like everyone had a fantastic night! Jeann, you're so cute and tiny, like a little pocket blogger. I love how Penguin Teen is incredibly supportive of Aussie bloggers and readers in general, in the YA group, it's been awesome getting to know Floss, and all the publicists representing the Aussie publishers. I'm so excited about their new PTA TV. Awesome recap Jeann, if this blogging gig doesn't work out, you've always got reporter to fall back on 😀

  6. I NEVER hear about these events! But it's so good to see one, though! We definitely need more in Aus.

I think it would be absolutely incredible to meet up with people as book obsessed as me. Especially other blogger's I follow. Jealous! Keeping this one in mind for next year. (:

  7. Even though I wasn't there I totally can relate! They had a PTA event in Sydney last year and it was so much fun. Felicity is the best at keeping the presentation interesting and she also posted Sunny and I's (and a couple others) up on the board as well! I wish we could all go to an event together!

  8. It sounds so much fun! There's no such a thing here, YA isn't popular genre 🙁 I'm curious about vlogs they will make!

    Anyway I love your dress!
