Series Recap: Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 4 – Masquerade

August 29, 2014 by Jeann @ Happy Indulgence | Features, Series Recaps

What a romantic episode! There was some development in the relationship between Mamoru and Usagi, as they felt the familiarity of each other and admitted that they were looking for each other at the Masquerade. Finally Tuxedo Kamen looks right at home in his own Tuxedo at a masked ball, and Usagi really stood out in her beautiful princess dress.

Out of all the episodes aired so far, if I recall correctly, Masquerade was probably the one that was the most different to the original dubbed episodes. There were some key parts that were important for the development of the Sailor Senshi, with Sailor Moon possessing a new tiara which yields yet another power, and the Senshi meeting all four of the Dark Kingdom villains.

The Sailor Senshi are even more kick ass than the original, with Sailor Mars blasting out fire without going through the whole power sequence, along with Sailor Moon’s tiara bursting the moonlight at the youma. It mixes things up – instead of sitting through lengthy transformation and power sequences every episode, it offers a bit of diversity.

I noticed a blatant lack of keeping the identity a secret this episode, whether it was because of the nature of the masquerade ball or because it is a weird plot device, it happened with both villains and the senshi. Several times, Luna would yell at Mamoru to “leave Usagi alone” even when she was in her disguise as Sailor Moon. Nephrite blatantly changed into himself from his disguise as a female in front of Ami and Rei.

I’m really loving the new Rei, in fact she may be my favourite character so far as she seems to be more endeared to Usagi this time round. She is also completely beautiful as Sailor Mars and really striking.

Also why is it that every time Usagi encounters Mamoru or Tuxedo Mask, that the other Senshi aren’t present to see their chemistry together? When he was kissing her while she was asleep, there was a brief romantic moment before Luna comes and ruins it lol.

Overall this episode was decent although I still loved the Rei episode even more, but SAILOR JUPITER will be here next time and I can’t wait!

What did you think of Usagi’s dress in this episode? Did you swoon during the moments with her and Mamoru?

  1. So I did it – I broke down and watched the first episode of Sailor Moon Crystal the other night and it made me realize I just couldn't continue watching it – its just so campy little middle school girl and I'm not that little girl anymore LOL. Some school type animes I can completely get behind and enjoy like FRUITS BASKET – I LOVED that one and hmmm I think there was one called Say I love You? I forget anyways I know I've watched more highschool level ones that I thought were adorable but I think this one just isn't for me.

I am however watching Norigami on Netflix currently and really enjoying it! You should check it out.

  2. Wow, I had no idea this time we are waiting even longer. I can't wait to meet Makoto, she's going to be awesome! I love the strength that she brings to the team. LOL that's a good way of looking at things, I thought it was creepy especially when Luna pointed it out, but overall I liked it. It's true about Usagi feeling the effects of being a Senshi.

The dance was really beautiful but I kind of wish there was a bit more emphasis between the couple. Glad to hear you enjoyed it as well, Wrikudoro.

  3. I know, we are waiting 3 weeks for this one apparently! She's my favourite so far, but I love Sailor Venus. She's got such a lovely heart besides from being famous hehe. Glad to hear you loved it as well, it was so romantic <3

  4. LOL So you get to meet me next time! 🙂 I cannot wait to see what you think of that episode. I think that I actually remember this one. I really liked it and I'm liking the sound of changes they brought there. I'm so happy you enjoyed it. Great review, Jeann 🙂

  5. Errr~ I have nothing to say about this post since I haven't watched even a single episode of Sailor Moon. Perhaps, I was too busy watching and re-watching other anime shows. 😀 But nice feature, Jeann. I am sorry that I couldn't relate.

  6. OMG! Sailor Jupiter will be on in the next one? That's awesome! I may have rarely watched the first anime, but I remember loving her a lot when I did. And yes, I heard Rei is so much more nearer to her original persona in the manga. She really is supposed to be endearing and graceful and kind. I'm liking this one already!

  7. I am dying because Sailor Jupiter's episode is coming up and I cannot wait. I cannot wait. I cannot–oh wait, I'm sorry. I got carried away. Anyway, I totally agree about Rei being so stunning. She'd be my favorite as well if I haven't pledged my allegiance to Makoto. I also agree with this episode being so romantic. I squealed myself to death. XD

  8. Oh my God, the waiting for Sailor Jupiter episode is physically painful. 3 weeks. I'm slowly dying.

Despite of the creepiness of kissing a sleeping girl you know for 4 episodes, it's still better than Usagi getting drunk. At least she's being herself when she recognized the feel of Mamoru's lips (oh god). I noticed that they somehow did a number of foreshadowings about Usagi's inability to stay up late, just to change drunkenness to tiredness. She constantly tired throughout the episode (at the beginning, at school). That's a really good writing!

The dance is beautiful, the music is a spot on, and the introduction of all the Shitennous (they're alive and working together, as opposed to being killed off very quickly one by one like in the manga) really makes me eager to see how this series unfold.

A little interaction between Ami and Rei is a very nice addition. I really believe the writer wanted to develop the characters nicely by adding some small interactions.
