The TBR and GIF Book Tags

September 28, 2014 by Jeann @ Happy Indulgence | Books, Features

We got tagged by Cait from Notebook Sisters, Rachel from A Perfection Called Books, and Laura from Laura Plus Books for the TBR Tag! Thought it would be fun to talk about the ever looming TBR and show you our piles.

TBRbooktag

How do you keep track of your TBR pile?

Jeann: I keep all my ARCs on one bookshelf, separate from all my other reads. I also keep track of my “to-review” and “to-read” books on Goodreads, and use a list to track my reading for the next month. What would we do without Goodreads?

Michelle:

Screen Shot 2014-09-24 at 8.55.20 PM

Pile? We’re talking about shelf here. I have never ever had just a TBR “pile” before, haha! (This is 1/10000 of the shelf, LOLOL)

To keep track of what I want to read and all, I use Goodreads. I know many other similar sites, but really once you begin adding what you have and want to have, it’ll become your #1 source and you won’t want to change to anything else. I use the “scan” feature a lot too on the mobile app! I think that GR is what most people’ll answer with this question!

Is your TBR mostly print or ebook?

Jeann: Definitely print. Almost half of the books on my shelf are on my TBR which I haven’t read yet, because I keep on picking up new books D: I really should go on a book buying ban. But my eBook TBR is pretty massive as well. And behold, my TBR shelf with ARCs…

TBR

Michelle: What do you think?

IMG_2544

*awes at its beauty* This is only half of my whole product of pretties. There’s two more shelves under!

I anyways prefer having physical books than ebooks on my Kindle. But books are books, and I treat them all the same, haha. <3

How do you determine which book from your TBR to read next?

Jeann: I’m an emotional reader, so I usually pick up what I feel like reading. If I haven’t had the best week, I’d go for a light contemporary, but if I’m in a thought provoking mood then perhaps a dystopian or a thriller. Sometimes I just want to be swept away in a thick fantasy land or swoon over a romance when I go for new adult. I also plan my ARC reading for the month, based on release dates and what you guys rave over.

Michelle: I go through all sorts of ways. During the summer, I even went through a phase of the TBR jar where I write the titles of different reads, through the sticky notes into a jar, and pick them out. I usually now look at release dates for ARCs and randomly pick ones I want to read ASAP. Or of course… library due-dates and Netgalley archive dates are in the way, too. xD

A book that’s been on your TBR list the longest?

Jeann: This awesome Black Dagger Brotherhood series still in its shrink wrap. I’m actually quite proud because it reminds me of when I first discovered Goodreads; I was looking for paranormal books that were highly recommended and this was at the top of the list at the time.

Michelle:

IMG_2546

As in time when I purchased them and added them into my shelves, these two probably have to be some of the oldest. I just never got the chance to get to them yet, haha. I was literally about to pick up Graceling a few months ago when I was in my fantasy-awesome phase, but other reads got in the way. I’ve heard so many great things about both!

A book you recently added to your TBR?

Jeann: I picked up A Little Something Different by Sandy Hall at the book store and found Let The Sky Fall by Shannon Messenger at the library 😀 Michelle and I twinned here, I totally sense an oncoming buddy read, yay!

recentTBR

Michelle:

IMG_2547

I always feel lucky when I’m the first person to read a library book after it was bought into it, hehe. That’s what happened with YOLO and A Little Something Different, and coming from the fact that they were both just released. Firecracker is supposed to be a lot like New Girl, the TV show, which is absolutely adorable! Talk about contemporary-romance!

A book on your TBR strictly because of its beautiful cover?

Jeann: These beautiful F. Scott Fitzgerald hardcover classics. LOOK HOW PRETTY THEY ARE. I’M A SHALLOW BOOK LOVER AND I DON’T CARE.

Fscottfitzgerald

Michelle: Okay.. I don’t really have books that are there because they’re just beautiful, but also because the summary/idea obviously has captivated me enough to buy it. But here are some of the prettiest pretties on my shelf! (Haha, that makes so much sense.)

IMG_2549

But I add pretty books onto my TBR on Goodreads all the time sometimes. 🙂

A book on your TBR that you never plan on reading?

Jeann: I have a lot of sequels on my TBR which I bought way back when I thought I could read THEM ALL. Some sequels are like number #4 or number #10. For some reason I also have the full Fallen series, which I thought was okay when I first started reading. Not anymore.

Michelle:

I PLAN TO READ THEM ALL! #CrazyManiacBookworm I buy books, so why don’t read them? And I do a pretty good job on Goodreads when adding books that I want to read/someone has recommended me. Not reading a book that I have bought makes me sad. 🙁

An unpublished book on your TBR that you’re excited for?

Jeann: Without a doubt, it’s Winter by Marissa Meyer because EVIL SNOW WHITE. And I totally love the Lunar Chronicles with my favourite recent ship Cinder x Kai and Thorne x Cress and I need to know what happens now!

Michelle:

Credit to whoever made this gorgeous gif! (Since I am the gif queen, haha.) Cassie Clare gets me excited every time she announces a new to-be-released book. Almost every book that she has published has gotten a 5 star rating from me, and I loved the characters from this one in COHF! She is genius and my favourite author. 😉

A book on your TBR that basically everyone has read but you?

Jeann: Yup, definitely A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness and Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. I need to read these now because I always hear about them but the never ending TBR.

monstere&p

Michelle:

IMG_2551

THESE GUYS. I want to read them so badly—it’s so agonizing. Jeann loved Four and so did many of you, and I feel so left behind. :/ I’ve read many mixed reviews on The Forest of Hands and Teeth, but I always am looking for a new zombie read since they almost-always disappoint me.

A book on your TBR that everyone recommends to you?

Jeann: Oh how I want to read these now. Lucky with The 5th Wave movie coming out and The Infinite Sea being released, I will have more motivation to pick up the first book. I’ve heard so many awesome recs with The Darkest Minds and need to read it!

darkestminds_5thwave

Michelle:

IMG_2552

Yes, that is the Eiffel Tower next to Daughter of Smoke & Bone. Hmm, I just felt like it had the right “feel” for it, haha. So many people *coughcough Cait* have said that people are recommending this book to them all the time. And I can seriously agree! This is definitely going to be read soon—I’ve heard so many great things!

A book on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

Jeann: I am dying to read the Heroes of Olympus series because PERCABETH. Oh how I long to read these. I LOVED the Percy Jackson series and I need MOAR. At the rate I’m going, I’ll probably get around to reading these when the series is over.

Michelle:

IMG_2553

*BOOKS I’ve had Just One Day for a while now, and now that I’m going to be going to Gayle’s signing in November *SQUEALS* I really have got to get to this! Landline is just BÆ and The Bees‘s cover is just awing and alluring. I don’t know how else I can possibly describe my physical NEED for these.

How many books are on your Goodreads TBR shelf?

Jeann: I actually cheat to make it not look so bad. On my actual TBR shelf, there are 975. Sometimes when I go through it, I have no idea what some of those books are lol. I also have a sounds good shelf with 120 books on it, and a to read sequels shelf with 101 books that I don’t want to touch until I’ve read the first book. Oh yeah, and the to read later shelf with 26 books I will probably never get to. So overall that is 1222 books. WOAH O_O I need to do a spring clean.

Michelle: Hmm… 654. Haha, I remember when it was 250! That’s crazy. But really, 2015 is going to be a crazy year of debuts and books that I will die for to have. Watch, go on my profile now, and I bet that it has surpassed the 660 mark by now! xD

The GIF Book Tag

Ebony from Daring Damsels and Amanda at Book Badger tagged us for the Gif book tag. As Michelle is the Gif Queen, she’ll show you guys her thoughts on 10 books – picked 5 from each of the tags.

1. Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare

I needed my mommy the most after reading this—showing off your sobs are the best thing in the world. :’)

2. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

Noah. Just Noah. HE’S MY FAVOURITE PART OF THE BOOK!

3. On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta

I’ve heard many things… AND THEY’RE ALL POSITIVE! #PositiveVibes

4. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

I cried, and I cried, and I cried. I CAME OUT OF THE MOVIE THEATRE LIKE A WRECK BECAUSE THIS BOOK WAS PURE EXCELLENCE AND I BECAME OBSESSED AND FELT SYMPATHY. Markus Zusak changed my life.

5. The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

YUCK. This was a boring ride for me. I don’t want to see it ever again.

6. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

It’s going to go either one way or the other for me. Let’s hope for the positive.

7. Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia/Margaret Stohl

This book was the best thing that’s ever happened to me. It’s one of the books that got me into YA! #HappyReadingMoments

8. Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas

I HAVE IT, BUT NEED TO READ IT. Dangerous Boys was amazing. Girls are better than boys, so therefore Dangerous GIRLS will be even more phenomenal. *jokes* xD

Adam is my husband, boyfriend, hubby. Mia is my best friend and sister. Together, I’ll let them be together. 🙂 *blushes* Gayle Forman is genius.

  1. Jeann, I thought my Goodreads to-read list was massive at 840! I'm a lot like you. I keep my ARC'S separate from my other reads and I have a list of books I plan on reading for the month.

I haven't read the Hero's of Olympus either and would love to start this series.

Michelle, I can't wait for Lady Midnight either. I love Cassandra Clare and can't wait to read it.

  2. Yes… YOU NEED TO READ DANGEROUS GIRLS! IT'S AMAZING! I actually liked it more than Boys, although I did read Girls first so I don't know if that's why.

Jellicoe Road is one I really want to read because of all the amazing things I have heard about it.

The 5th Wave is one I definitely plan to get to soon, especially with the second book out and a movie on it's way.

    • I read Jellicoe Road but somehow I found it…kind of lacking from all the raves from everyone. It's still an enjoyable book with a hazy narrator though 🙂 I need to read the 5th Wave as welll, especially since I received the 2nd book to read!

  3. Those Fitzgerald's, Jeann!!! They deserve an endless amount of exclaimation marks for possibly being the most pretty, gorgeous, divine covers I have ever seen. I love it when they're in a bookstore, because I can just stare in awe. They look so incredible face to face, and they no doubt look astonishing on your bookshelf!

You have awesome reactions to those books, Michelle! Though I'm sorry you didn't like The 5th Wave, because I'm about to order that from my library and have heard a lot of praise for it! Hopefully my experience is better!

  4. Thanks for the tag! _<

JEANN: Ack, so organized! I just shove my books randomly wherever they'd fit on my shelves! Or you know, just on the tables, sofas and other places. You're shelf's already curved from the weight of the books! Mine are, too. D: I'm so scared for the books to fall, haha!

I know! I buy a lot of sequels when they're on sale, but only if they're at MOST the third book. 🙂 But I almost never end up buying the first book because I'm lazy like that. And WINTERRRRRR! I don't care about the ships, I JUST WANT THORNE. __< I totally get about having an entire TBR shelf, haha! I think 1/3 of my shelves are books I haven't read yet or plan to finish some other time. Your shelf's adorable, by the way. 😀

So awesome that you plan on reading all the books on your TBR. I bought a lot of books that I know I'll never even bother opening. 🙁 Ooh, and I love that version of the Forrest of Hands and Teeth! Super pretty, and I hope to read it someday too, despite the mixed reviews. I also tried reading DoSB a few years back and couldn't get into it, but I want to try it again. Maybe we can buddy read it, Michelle! 😀 I want to read Landline, too!

HAHAHAHA TO THE GIF FOR THE 5TH WAVE. I SO AGREE. You haven't read PJO!? GO NOWWWWW. Beautiful Creatures is one of my first YA reads as well, and I enjoyed all the books. ^_^ Your joke about Dangerous Girls is so true, though. I loved it a lot more than Dangerous Boys.

To the both of you: Eep, so jealous of A Little Something Different! My favorite local bookstore just sold out their copies. T_T Thanks again for the tag! And so, so sorry about this messy comment. x)

xDDD *props to another 5th Wave hater hehehe* NOOPE. OMG my friend has been bothering me non-stop to read it! All I hear is "Percabeth" 24/7. LOLOL. Darn I NEED TO READ DANGEROUS GIRLS ASAP. Abigail Haas's writing is so soothing… I'll need DG on a crazy day, haha. LOL Aimee, I love your comments! <3 Thank you!

  5. Michelle, I loved your comment on being the first to get a library book, I do too! Something about being the first to read it. Hehe. Jeann, I haven't read Eleanor and Park either. I loved Rowell's books, but I do need to read Landline too. The 5th Wave (and Infinite Sea) are on mt TBR for Sci-Fi Month in November. Lovely bookcases ladies too. Great post! Hope you get to read them all soon (but we all know, our TBR will always be high) Hehe. 🙂

  6. Well girls, we agree about TBR pile just growing and growing and it's so true that for every read book I add two more to my TBR shelf. Yup. Also I really have to read Daughter of Smoke & Bone and I've been planing to do read it this summer but well it didn't happen.

I must say that I loooove those gifs!! Great post ladies and I agree with all of them 😉

  7. These tags are awesome! I had SO much fun looking through them, especially because they're filled with pictures of pretty book. 😉

Jeann, I'm so jealous of your F. Scott Fitzgerald book… I mean, I probably wouldn't read them… BUT they are so gorgeous. I absolutely love the design. I also recommend The 5th Wave and The Darkest Minds — I didn't think I would enjoy TDM, however it was a really well written and enjoyable read. It was one of those books that was just sitting on my shelf for ages and finally picked up, and I'm glad I did.

Michelle, you MUST read Daughter of Smoke and Bone. That book is amazing! I put off reading it for so long, eventually gave in, and loved it.

And as usual, your gif choices are amazing. 🙂

  8. A Little Something Different is so purdy. But, those Fitzgerald books win the prize for most gorgeous books I've ever seen in my life. I LOVE THEM AND I WANT THEM. JEANN YOU MUST READ HEROES OF OLYMPUS. THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL AND FULL OF PERCABETH FEELS. Ooh nice gifs, Michelle! If I Stay is pretty genius and yaas Dangerous Girls! Girls are totes better than guys :PPP

    This reminds me that i need to go and do some tags that we've been tagged in but I can't remember one of them because I forgot to write it down ;__;

  9. Oh, I have the Heros of Olympus on my TBR too and I really have to get around to it! I have a huuuge list of TBR ebook (the majority are there) but quite a lot in print too. So yeah, I should probably get to reading them, but you know, time >< I am looking forward to seeing all these reviews though!

Jellicoe Road was an amazing read for me! How you feel about Beautiful Creatures is exactly how I feel about Twilight haha xD Oh and the Host, it was just… so speechless D: I loved Percy Jackson, I hope you do too! Oh and we all know those Book Man feels 😛

    • I know, I would love to read Heroes of Olympus because everyone tells me it's amazing, especially because I love Percy Jackson <3 Glad to hear, I'm trying not to review every book though lol XD I did enjoy Jellicoe Road, but somehow I was expecting it to be different. The Host wasn't very good *sighs*

  10. Purdy books. I love those Fitzgerald special editions, just gorgeous! Are they all unread review copies Jeann? Holy crap, you've got enough to last you until June of 2023 😀 I can't believe you haven't read The 5th Wave yet. WHAT! No, this won't do at all. I demand you read it at once. OFF WITH HER HEAD!

Mich, you're bookcase is so incredibly charming, I absolutely adore your bookends. With your navy wall behind it, it looks so warm and inviting. I actually never considered white bookshelves with dark walls. I'm designing my own library in one of my spare bedrooms and that looks beautiful <3

Ahhh designing your own library sounds awesome! I wish I had more room to spread all of my books out and create some awesome interior designs! <3

  11. GUYS GUYS GUYS, I know them feels! I'm in the exact same predicament, where I continuously buy more books but DON'T READ THEM. I think I have a problem :/ Is there an AA for book buyers? You know me, I'm not a fast reader by any means, and life tends to get in the way sometimes so the TBR pile definitely builds up. I've completely lost track of how many books I have on there because I don't add every one of them on Goodreads. 🙁 But it's…a lot. Let's just keep it at that.

Buahaha, I loved the use of gifs Michelle, they convey your emotions towards the books so well! 😛

    • Oh my gosh I think the AA for book buyers is perfect! I haven't been looking at the bookstore lately, trying to get through some of my books on the shelf which is great. I even have doubles sometimes :S Oh Joy I wonder if it's anywhere near my "TBR"? XD

  12. Jeann: your F. Scott Fitzgerald are GORGEOUS. Ohhh, just those covers alone are delicious. I AM A SHALLOW BOOK LOVER WITH YOU TOO, THEN. I'm also very pleased at the amoutn of bookshelf and tbr pictures in this post. *nods* You have both done well.

Michelle: STAHP PUTTING IT OFF AND GO FOR DAUGHTER OF SMOKINESS. You'll either love it or hate it (looool, so reassuring right?) and really there is just no answer except to fling caution to the wind and eat it. EAT IT NOW.

Loved the gif tag too! Spot on with The Book Thief. And I seriously need to read The Host. XD

EAT THE HOST OMGGG IT'S AMAZINGGG! 😀

  13. Great tags ladies! 🙂

My TBR pile is pretty massive as well, although it consists mostly of books I've gotten as gifts, or bought for myself that I haven't gotten to yet! I know at least that if I ever run out of books to read (which let's face it will probably never happen) then I have those to fall back on. I think I'm going to try and figure out a system to get to them sooner though *starts considering options*

Anywho, Jeann I love the look of those F. Scott Fitzgerald classics! THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL! I loved The Great Gatsby so I can't wait to read some of his other works!

I really need to read Just One Day as well which has been on my TBR for ages too which I can't wait to get to.

    Loved reading these posts 🙂

    • Thanks Genie, I've started picking up reads from my shelf instead of the bookstore which is great to save money and get through it lol. I totally know what you mean about getting to them sooner though, it's so hard because we want to READ IT ALL.

I know, I couldn't resist picking them up when Borders were closing them down, they were on sale. I haven't read any of those books yet but I'm interested in Gatsby.

  14. Jeann….that's quite the load you have on your TBR. Now I don't feel do bad anymore :b

AND YOUR FITZGERALD COVERS! Where and how do I get my hands on this because I'm all grabby hands right now. They're beautiful. Way. Too. Beautiful xD AND YES! READ THE DARKEST MINDS! Although…I've never seen your cover before and….I'm not the biggest fan. But the quality is the words inside, am I right?

Michelle! YES TO DoSaB. It was amazing. You need to read it asap. That is it. TBH, I've got to read Four as well. I'll get there! There's just so many things in the way right now xD
