Indulgence Insider #10: Movie Week

October 5, 2014 by Jeann @ Happy Indulgence | Books, Features, Haul, Indulgence Insider, Weekly Memes

Indulgence Insider is our version of Stacking the Shelves and the Sunday Post, bringing you this week’s haul, bookish news and discussion posts from around the blogosphere!

An interesting week for me, if you guys have read my announcement that I’m back to blogging solo.

It’s also a big movie week, saw Gone Girl which was amazing, disturbing, shocking and utterly riveting. I recommend seeing it, if you don’t mind being disturbed. I’ll be watching Maze Runner today, can’t wait for that heart pumping maze action! Can’t wait to let you guys know my thoughts.

I’ve also been obsessed with the Sailor Moon dresses from Living Dead Clothing and the Disney release from Black Milk Clothing.

Got a bookish instagram up, haven’t got any posts up yet but follow me here.

Book Haul

Review copies — physical

Thank you to UQP, Penguin Australia and Hachette Australia for sending me these review copies!

Review copies — digital (Click on the cover for the Goodreads link)

All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven – The idea behind this is SO NEAT! Every single ARC that went out contained happy thoughts written on sticky notes. The ones on my book are “A warm chicken sandwich”, “Sunrise”, and “Chocolate” and I totally agree.

Loving Daughters by Olga Masters and Joan Makes History by Kate Grenville – UQP Australian classics that were sent to me.

The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey – This gives me a good reason to catch up with The 5th Wave before the movie comes out as well.

Immortal by J.R. Ward – I haven’t read the rest of the series yet, although I’ve been meaning to.

The Walking Dead Book Ten – Bought my yearly instalment of The Walking Dead graphic novel

Messenger of Fear by Michael Grant – Can’t wait to read The Messenger of Fear, I’ve heard great things!

The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa – Thank you to Kelly for these copies!

Legend by Marie Lu – Swapped for this book to complete my Legend series collection on YA Book Exchange.

I’ve been a lucky winner lately, won most of these on publisher Twitter and Facebook competitions! That’s a Divergent DVD from HarperCollins (YAY now I can stare at Four all day), Sin City movie pass and DVD (it also came with a Tshirt and hoodie!) even though the movie isn’t showing anymore, and The Maze Runner double movie pass which I’m using today. It’s really worth following publishers on Twitter!

  1. I absolutely loved how All The Bright Places came with different post it notes for everyone. Good marketing skills right there! I'm so excited to get to it. As always, I hope you love all the books! And congratulations on the win as well. 😀

  2. Oh I know, I love seeing the trailer! I just can't wait until it's out, but I know it's going to have a cliffhanger. The ARC was a really great idea and I loved to see everyone's different copies! I might have to put the chocolate and sunrises one on the front too 🙂

  3. Great haul this week. I saw Gone Girl the other day and absolutely LOVED it! It did not disappoint at all.

I received an ARC of All the Bright Places a few weeks ago but mine didn't come with happy thoughts 🙁 It was signed by the author and my sticky note just had a picture of a flower on it. I've been hearing amazing things about The Messenger of Fear, I really want to read that one. I hope you enjoy all of your books.

    • Oh I loved gone Girl so much, a week on I'm still thinking about the movie! It was fantastic. Ooh you might have to flick through your copy, that's how I found some additional notes within. It's awesome that it was signed by the author though! Thank you, have a lovely week.

  4. I rewatched that HG trailer and it is just SO GOOD. I think I can start getting throughly excited anytime now (I mean, I am really exicted, but not quite at the stage where I can't wait a moment longer to see it. I guess I want to go into the cinema like that).

Sending out ARCS with nice thought-sticky-notes is such a wonderful idea! I can't say I agree with the warm chicken sandwich, since I don't eat meat and haven't ever had one, when I did, but definitely chocolate and sunrises. Those two are brilliant choices.

  5. Lol I guess it just means the chicken is freshly cooked Kelly? Gone Girl WAS AMAZING. SO GOOD. So much better than Maze Runner, but then again, I do like Ben Affleck. He has this aloofness that was really perfect for the role that he played, and alongside Rosamund Pike, it was amazing.

I do need to read the 5th Wave *stares* perhaps I will. *strokes beard*

  6. I'm really curious to see what you thought of the Maze Runner! I've seen some people now who read the books and liked the movie more and some that didn't. I saw a trailer for The Gone Girl and think I'll have to pass on that…I don't like scary/disturbing movies :/ I hope you have a great week Jeann =)

    • I was disappointed with The Maze Runner, while the book was kind of dry and it was hard to get used to, I thought it was a lot smarter than the movie, which skipped over some stuff. Hehe yes Gone Girl was definitely disturbing, steer clear if you're not into that sort of thing XD

  7. I dunno about the warm chicken sandwich, sounds more like salmonella than happiness to me. I've heard the book is incredible and so emotional. I was surprised with a copy too and can't wait to get started. I haven't read Gone Girl as yet, but have a copy. Was the movie really THAT good? I'm just sceptical because it has Ben Affleck in it. He's managed to ruin so many promising movies for me.

Jeann, you need to read The 5th Wave. In fact, I demand you read it next. No, no, I won't hear of it. Otherwise I'll be forced to take matters into my own hands.

*glares* Slowly move towards the book and pick it up.

  8. Ohhhhh my gosh, you really shouldn't have shared that link to Living Dead, those sailor scout outfits are glorious. Plus Halloween is coming up! Although since it's an AUS company I guess it's the world's way of stopping me from becoming bankrupt xD

Bec told me you guys went and saw the Maze Runner! ^^ Hope you liked it!

    • Oh I have a pink chibi moon one and it is so cute! You should get one 😀 They are the best. Yeah, we saw the Maze Runner, I was disappointed with how much they excluded from the book though.

  9. I love Grant's Gone series, but weirdly I have been compelled to pick up his other books. I read the Maze Runner series a while back and quite like it. Don't think I'll be watching the movie, though. xD I though the Infinite Sea was a pretty good sequel. 🙂

  10. I still haven't scheduled this month's Read Play Blog post, I just can't seem to get inspiration to write it and I seem kinda stuck with the question. Your Indulgence insider posts are a lot more manegeable now with only you ;).

I still haven't seen the second Hunger Games movie. Guess I need to catch up soon!
Lola recently posted…Sunday Post #94My Profile

    • Ah, it's okay if you miss out on a month or something Lola, I know the character that I will be picking around. I guess you could talk about your favourite character? Hehe, thanks 🙂 WOW YOU HAVEN'T SEEN CATCHING FIRE? What are you doing, go see it!

      • I just wrote my post and scheduled it for the 16th :). Your suggestion of going with my favourite character seemed to kick start my inspiration!

    • Oh my gosh, it is so incredible. The movie really left a lasting impact and definitely thought-provoking, and it fits hand in hand with the book as well. Thank you Kara, I need to catch up with the 5th wave first.

  11. I'm glad to hear that the Gone Girl movie was great and/if disturbing! I still need to read the book first that I just got for my Kindle this week, though with my review pile for this week, I don't think I can manage it any time soon!

Great haul, Jeann! And you're right following publishers on Twitter is well worth it! I got The Ghosts of Heaven as a read it now on NG thanks to Fierce Reads tweeting about it!

    Happy reading!

    • Oh my gosh, Gone Girl was so, so good and I'm really glad I read the book before the movie. They just went really well together. Oh my gosh, how amazing you got a book you wanted to read! I love keeping up with all the latest news on Twitter.

  12. I won a Gone Girl double pass…but I'm kind of almost too chicken to go. >_< I'm trying to convince my parents they want to go see it. lol! But congrats on you for winning SO much awesome stuff!! Messenger Of Fear is my favourite. ^-^ And ohhh, I got All The Bright Places too, only my sticky-note says "snow". I've never seen snow, but hehe, it's still so cool! Although I don't actually know the story behind the sticky notes. *shrugs* It just turned up as this huge surprise! I'm excited! XD
Cait @ Notebook Sist recently posted…Goodbye September || Stacking The Shelves #33My Profile

    • Oh my gosh, Cait, it is amazing! But if you get scared/disturbed from violent and shocking scenes, maybe it's best not to. Haha tell your parents it's a free movie and night out and you'll hold the fort 😉 Glad to hear you love MoF, I really wanted to read it. Oh how lovely, there are probably more sticky notes in your book too! I had to flick through it to find them 😀

  13. Great haul! My copy of All the Bright Places came with "Oy with the Poodles Already" on the sticky-note, and as a Gilmore Girl fangirl this made me practically giddy 🙂

I'm so excited for Mockingjay, although I wish it wasn't two movies. This seems to be the thing to do now with the last films, ever since Harry Potter and Twilight, but I'm not convinced (in this case at least) that it's anything more than another way to make more money off the franchise… Cynical, I know, but I also feel this way about film tie-in book covers!
Bernadette @ The Bum recently posted…Bookish Adaptations {2}: The Lizzie Bennet DiariesMy Profile

    • Thank you so much, ah it's so great when it comes with recognisable quotes hehe. I know, I wish Mockingjay was 1 movie too because then we have to wait for the 2nd one on a cliffhanger. Yeah, I'm not a big fan of film tie in covers either.

  14. Seeing 'The Infinite Sea' reminds me that I really want to read 'The 5th Wave' as well since I've seen so many people saying that it's really good! Hope you enjoy watching The Maze Runner and all the other books you've gotten this week 🙂
Eugenia @ Genie In A recently posted…Genie’s Weekly News (3)My Profile

    • I'm exactly the same, I'm thinking of picking it up soon because the movie is coming out next year. Plus Infinite Sea is a good reminder to read it. Thank you Genie, I watched Maze Runner yesterday and not sure what I feel about it!

  15. So…because I had no time to pick up Gone Girl before the movie (cardinal sin, I know xD) I went into it blind. And came out…wow, disturbed. BUT IT WAS SO GOOD! I cannot wait to hear what you think of Messenger of Fear. Cait loved it and I found myself starring at it for ages the other day, but you know how it is in a bookstore. Everything else was just whispering my name :b I hope this week's a good one for you, Jeann! <33
    Jess @MyReadingDress recently posted…Seeking Saturday’s Read #6My Profile

    • Thanks Jess, I am SO GLAD you enjoyed it, it's definitely disturbing and shocking isn't it? Will you be reading the book now? I thoroughly recommend both, they go with each other hand in hand. Ah yes, I know that feeling in a bookstore, but then I think of all my neglected pretties at home and that usually steers me away. Thank you, you too!

  16. Do you know how jealous I am right now? You know Four (Tobias) is a potential baby daddy. I Love him and what they did with the movie. Especially compared with Vampire Academy, City of Bones etc.

    Congratulations girlie.

  17. I'm kind of disappointed that they cut Mockingjay in two! But I am still excited to see the film. I miss posting new books, but I haven't acquired anything new lately due to my slump! Hopefully I get back on track soon!
