Read Play Blog #4 – What Character I Would Like to Be For Halloween

Read Play Blog 2

Read Play Blog is a meme about video games and books, posted every 16th of the month. Bloggers are encouraged to answer a discussion question, and recommend a video game that is similar to a book they liked. Hosted by Happy Indulgence Books & Read Me Away.

Read Play Blog is back for another month of gaming! This month’s question is:

What game character would you like to be for Halloween?

Since we don’t celebrate Halloween in Australia, there are two game characters I’ve thought about cosplaying at conventions as: Rinoa Heartilly from Final Fantasy 8, or Chell from Portal. They are both asian and I love how both of their costumes are relatively simple and are wearable and fashionable, and wouldn’t need me walking around in something revealing or complicated. However, I’ve never cosplayed before, so I’ll need to work up the courage to do it.

Rinoa has been one of my favourite female gaming characters, she’s idealistic, beautiful, playful, loyal and friendly. I love how she matches Squall’s personality as he tends to be more guarded and cold, and her personality really warms his heart. I totally ship this couple and they are so cute together! I love the romance between them in the game, and how she will wait for him no matter how long they take to get reunited. I love the angel theme in Rinoa’s costume as well.

Chell well we have never heard her speak as a silent character on Portal, but I’ve had a glimpse into her personality from reading the game comics. It’s obvious from what she goes through that she’s intelligent, resilient, strong, a fast learner and definitely doesn’t respond to being antagonised lol. I’m really impressed by Chell but the only thing stopping me from cosplaying as her is the expensive portal gun I’d have to buy!

As you guys may notice, both Rinoa and Chell are on my Twitter profiles <3

My recommendation this month: The Walking Dead

I’ve already recommended several zombie games (Left 4 Dead 2 and Plants vs Zombies) so far so in keeping in line with the trend, The Walking Dead by Telltale Games would be perfect to play for Halloween. I constantly rave about it to everyone who is a fan of the show or of zombies, because it’s more of an ‘interactive movie’, with very little actual skills and game play required at all. The primary goal is to sit back and enjoy the supreme character development of a very charming little girl, Clementine and her protector Lee as they navigate the harsh zombie environment. It’s very easy to play and an excellent follow up to the TV show and graphic novel, and I just love it to bits. I cried at the end of the first season (there are 2 seasons out at the moment) and these are definitely emotional. If you love a good story (which I know you do, that’s why you’re reading this) I know you’d love The Walking Dead.

Currently Playing: Skyrim

I got bored of The Sims 4 because there isn’t much to do other than raise a family, throw parties and work so I went back to playing Skyrim. I have been playing it on and off, I just realised what a massive game it is!

Next month’s question: What is your favourite sci-fi game? – post your answer, recommendation & currently playing on the 16th of November, or anytime during the month!

Here’s a list of upcoming questions for the rest of the year.

  1. I don't play videogames because I suck at them. Literally. The only game I'm actually good at is Call of Duty Black Ops: Zombies and I have no idea why. Whenever I play, I slay EVERYTHING and zombies die by headshots and I get really far into the game. But any other game and I'm a mess!

Anyways, both those costumes sound/look amazing. I really wanted to dress up as Wednesday Addams for Halloween but I have class that day so I doubt I'll be able to. Great post, Jeann!

    • LOL it doesn't sound like you suck if you mastered COD! That is awesome, you sound totally kick ass. You either have it or you don't with shooters. Oh wow Wednesday would be a fun and creepy character to dress up as. Thanks Marianne!

  2. Yep, we definitely don't celebrate here – I've always wanted to go to US or Canada during Halloween time to ceelbrate. Oh yes, Walking Dead is definitely story line based, but a lot less actual game play if you know what I mean.

  3. Glad to know FF is so popular hehe! Nope, we don;t celebrate Halloween at all! some people have parties and there are some areas that do trick or treating, but that's mostly for the kids. Oh that would be so much fun Cyn!

  4. I know, the FF love definitely came out this month didn't it? Portal is really good, one of my favourite games (I feel like I've been saying that a lot lately). Oh my gosh, I don't know. I always aim for completion with games but I feel like I'll never get there with Skyrim.

  5. It would be so much fun cosplaying one of your favourite game characters I reckon 🙂 I wish we had Halloween so it would be a yearly occurrence. OH yes, I'm doing so many different sidequests now that it is taking forever, not sure how motivated I am to continue it! It's pretty crazy haha.

  6. I think cosplaying would be fun, you could cosplay from any TV series or movie actually! Harvest Moon is so much fun hehe. Oh my gosh, that would be a great one! Thanks Francine 😀 What have you cosplayed as before?

    • I miss playing Harvest Moon. I might get it again when I buy a DS. I've only cosplayed anime characters. Chii from Chobits, Aisaka Taiga from Toradora, and Yuki Nagato from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I was supposed to cosplay Nanako Dojima from Persona 4. Hey, that's a game character! But I haven't done so yet. Haha. I haven't attended a Con in a while.

  7. Ah yes, Lab Rat is the only Portal comic that is out, that's the only one! It was so good, OMG I DIDNT REALISE THERE WAS AN ARKHAM COMIC LIKE WHAT? I need to read that omg. My favourite game ever. Glad to hear you enjoyed those ones!

  8. I was Jodie Holmes from Beyond two souls last Halloween. I love the walking dead by Telltale! I've not finish season 2 (currently on episode 2) but I really like the game especially watching Clementine grow as a character. Not sure if you're a GOT fan but Telltale is coming up their version of a GOT game. I like portal but could not finish the game as it gave me headaches and didn't know how Chell looks like in Portal till i read the comics. Also I made a Read Play Blog post on my blog! Great post Jeann!

    • Oh wow that would have been awesome! I love the Walking Dead so much, it's so emotional. It is just as good as the first one, I just finished it recently. I can't wait until the GoT game, I'm a massive Telltale fan! I know, it's pretty funny how you never see or hear from Chell hey? Thanks for participating! I'll check it out.

  9. Yay for Rinoa! 😀 I'm so happy to see MORE FF love, haha! I've also been meaning to play Portal. Chell is so awesome, and GLaDOS is just so interesting. 🙂

Omg, Skyrim just MASSIVE. I've seen the amount of content and it just boggles my mind how absolutely huge that game's world is. *_* Are you aiming for completion? Or just go along for the ride?

  10. Do not even get me started on the Sims 4 because NO. I played my friend's and it was so dull. I stick to 3 thanks! 4 is basically 1 with good graphics 😛

For some reason I've always wanted to be Tifa Lockhart. I grew up playing Final Fantasy, and she's always been my favourite!

  11. YES I CAN'T WAIT TO DO THIS! Yeah, I would love to cosplay for a con or something, but since it is halloween, I totally understand. Anyways, YES CHELL. And of course Skyrim is massive. I tried to do as many sideplots as I could (thieves guild, dark brotherhood, etc.) but even still, I've never gonna be finished. Also, a dragon literally appears in every town, it's crazy! You make me want to continue playing it again, maybe next weekend haha! Awesome post Jeann!

  12. The only video games I've ever played are Sims and Final Fantasy lol (but everyone played final fantasy back in elementary school so that's not surprise!) Also, I find it so awesome that you guys celebrate Halloween In Australia, too! I have an Australian friend who always joked that she didn't when she was back home but i'm calling her tonight to tell her I caught her in a lie! LOL

  13. My brain shut off at "Portal comic". What?!? I had to go investigate. I found Lab Rat Portal 2 online, is that the only one, or is there more? Must investigate further!! I JUST started getting into comics a month or so ago when I started reading the tie in for the Arkham games. I hadn't been into comics much before, but found I love them when they are game spin offs. Now I've read some Arkham ones, Resident Evil ones (I had read the books before, but not the comics). Must find Portal comics!! 🙂 Thanks for posting about it!

  14. I had no idea you didn't celebrate Halloween in Australia! I also didn't know TWD had a video game though I should have haha. It kinda reminds me of Final Fantasy as in it's also about the storyline and not just the gaming. I used to be a big gamer but haven't had much time for it since my lil one was born.

  15. I don't really play a lot of video games so I'm not really sure if there are any I would like to cosplay. Maybe a girl from Harvest Moon or something. But a non-game cosplay that I really want to do is Alyssa from Splintered by A.G. Howard. She is fabulous. And you should totally try cosplaying, Jeann. It's fun. 😀

  16. I'm actually playing Skyrim at the moment, too! I love all the other Elder Scrolls games but haven't really played Skyrim much yet — which I hope to rectify very soon. Though I am such a wuss I had to download something that changed the giant spiders to draugrs instead. Haha. xD Thanks for sharing, loved reading this post! 🙂

    • Oh wow, glad to hear we're both playing the same games haha! HAHA oh that is so adorable! That's the great thing about the game, you can find so many great mods out there. When I first got it, I spent half a day just modding it lol (mainly additional followers, NPCs and high res backgrounds and menu)

Glad to hear you enjoyed it Kara! <3

  17. I haven't played Final Fantasy 8, but I really want to! The two characters I choose for today's post are also characters I would like to cosplay, Lightning more then Sora as I am not as short as Sora. Just like you I haven't worked up the courage to actually cosplay and I have long hair so putting that all up and wearing a wig is going to be annoying. I am still hoping I find a character with long brown hair to cosplay once, so I don't have to wear a wig. My sister has quite a collection of cosplays and goes to almost every anime convention here in the Netherlands.

I once bought Portal 1 and 2 during a steam sale, but I haven't played them yet. I am a big fan of puzzle games, so I think I will enjoy them. Just need to make time to game a bit more.

I usually stay away from zombie books and games, so I don't think the Walking Death is something for me, but I love games that focus heavily on the story.

    • It seems the final fantasies that we have played are different ones for the most part! Yeah, that's why I picked people that are easiest for me to cosplay lol, that and Sailor Mars, although she isn't my favourite sailor scout. That's pretty cool that your sister is into cosplay, I'm always impressed with the effort that people go through. Oh my gosh, play Portal! you will love it. It's so witty 🙂
