Read Play Blog #5 – Your Favourite Sci-Fi Game

Read Play Blog 2

Read Play Blog is a meme about video games and books, posted every 16th of the month. Bloggers are encouraged to answer a discussion question, and recommend a video game that is similar to a book they liked. Hosted by Happy Indulgence Books & Read Me Away.

Read Play Blog is back for another month of gaming! It’s sci-fi month so our question this month is: What is Your Favourite Sci-Fi Game?

My favourite: Starcraft 2

sc2

I love how gaming gives us one of the deepest explorations of science fiction and it really does bring it to life as you get to experience the technology and other races come to life. While Mass Effect comes a close second, my favourite sci-fi game is wholly and truly Starcraft 2. Yup, I’m a Blizzard girl through and through and I have grown up with playing this epic three race competitive game.

Starcraft 2 has a really deep storyline revolving around the Zerg (aliens), Terran (humans) and Protoss (Advanced robotic aliens). In particular, there’s a romance between Kerrigan and Jim Raynor who are torn apart when Kerrigan gets kidnapped by the Zerg. With planetary wars, political tensions and a race against the emperor in the galaxy, the campaign mode in Starcraft really hooks you in.

The true reason why I love Starcraft 2 though, is the constantly evolving strategy it takes in multiplayer mode. With constant updates, a thriving community that adapts to new strategies and units, Starcraft 2 really takes a lot of practice for you to rank in a higher league and to stay there. Somewhat cult like in its gameplay, you get gamers who are purely dedicated to Starcraft alone. I love it so much, but it takes a lot of practice and frustration.

My recommendation: Mass Effect series

masseffect

Starcraft isn’t for everyone because of the RTS nature of the game which has a steep learning curve. What I would recommend for anyone who loves sci-fi is the mass effect series! You get to become Commander Shepherd (either male or female) who commands their crew into space to do missions, while shooting laser guns at aliens and baddies and scouting through planets for minerals. Mass Effect is well loved for really truly exploring the space genre and giving us a fantastic storyline to boot. So far I’ve only played the first one, but I’ve heard good things about the rest of the series.

Currently Playing: Call of Duty Advanced Warfare

There’s nothing like a newly released game that reminds you that you need to upgrade your PC. I just upgraded my PC 3 years ago and now it is struggling to run COD. Anyway, I just started the campaign and all the new tech is actually quite interesting for a shooter, I do have to scale the graphics down on my screen though.

Next month’s question: What is on your gaming wishlist? Recommend something to gift to a friend! – post your answer, recommendation & currently playing on the 16th or anytime during the month and link up!

Here’s a list of upcoming questions for the rest of the year.

I almost never gave Mass Effect a try. But then, one of my best friends got into the series, and I could resist. It's truly one of the BEST games I've ever played! Unfortunately, I never completed the series. I shared an Xbox 360 + games with an ex-boyfriend, and when we broke up, I ended up leaving all my games behind. Ugh! But…that's okay. Even though I'll have to re-buy the games, I now have an excuse to start all over and ensure that Tali doesn't die.

  2. I don't play a lot of games but I've always like the Knights of the Old Republic PC games. I love how replayable they are and how you get to build your character and influence your part members.

I did try Starcraft once upon a time but I could never get into it.

YEEEEEES, STARCRAFT! Once again, we hit each other's faves/games to talk about, haha! I'm so happy to see the love for this game. 🙂

Also Mass Effect. It seems rather popular for this month's posts, and I am not complaining at all. It just makes me want to play the games MORE. 🙂

    • YAY I'm so glad you like Star Craft too! I thought Mass Effect would be a popular one, because that's what came to mind but I definitely love Blizzard hehe. YOU SHOULD PLAY THEM!

  4. I am obsessed with Advanced Warfare right now, I can't stop playing it. Although I am playing on PS4, not PC. Mass Effect is one of my favourite game series, even if the original third game ending was a disaster. Luckily they released another one afterwards because of all the complaints they got. Number 2 might be my favourite of the series though, so many amazing new characters are introduced in that.

    • I just finished the campaign and it was quite a long one. Quite exciting lol! I haven't played MP yet though, will have to save that for the weekend. I'm so glad you loved Mass Effect, I haven't played 2 or 3 though. Can't wait to play the 2nd though, now that you say that!

If I had about 3-4 hours more free…. I'd totally play Mass Effect. Sounds really interesting and I've been recently getting more into gaming. I've been playing random, non-story games so far, so I don't get too distracted. But thanks a lot for the recommendations, Jeann!

I have never played Starcraft, I'm not much of an RTS person but my boyfriend likes the game.

And of course you know that I love Mass Effect already, lol.

I have Mass Effect 3, but not 1 and 2 >_< I need to get those, too!

As for my favorite sci-fi game, it has to be the Star Ocean series. I love it so, so, so much. Interstellar travel has always been interesting to me, and this series gives me that much – a young human accidentally transported to another world, or a group of young teens finding out an anomaly in a galaxy, travels there, and lands in several planets trying to see what it is… it's just exciting 😀

    • Oh wow so you played it first? It all links up together which makes the experience pretty awesome. The Star Ocean series sounds freaking awesome, I just love the sound of it! Wow!

  8. YAY! New comment platform! No more error messages *throws cake everywhere*

I'm not a big gamer, but as a gaming widow I can highly recommend any of the Mass Effect series. Hubster absolutely loves them! He's obsessed, not only games, but he HAS to buy the highest priced collectors editions, he's got figurine sets, both the plane ship things they fly around in. It's basically that and Assassins Creed. Whenever a new one is released, I don't hear a peep out of him for weeks.

    It's lovely.

    • I'm glad you like it, this one seems to be working a lot smoother and quicker too 😀 I'm so glad you appreciate the Mass Effect series even though you're not a big gamer. Oh my gosh, those collector's editions must look totally swish!

  9. I promise to come up with a post soon! BUT YAY MASS EFFECT. I actually haven't played Starcraft since I don't have a PC, and also I don't think it's my type of game haha. I don't know though, I've never tried it!

    • No problems Val, Yeah, I don't think Starcraft is for everyone which is why I didn't recommend it. But Mass Effect seems to have the consensus this month 🙂

Hmm, does Xenosaga count? I was absolutely obsessed with that series on the Play Station 2. I've never played either of these but I've heard so much about them. "There’s nothing like a newly released game that reminds you that you need to upgrade your PC." LOL so unbelievably true. Quite sad though. xD

    • I've actually never played it, so I'm not sure lol! Oh my gosh my comp struggled so much with COD but it was totally worth it XD
