December 27, 2014 by Jeann @ Happy Indulgence | Books, Chatterbox, Features

We all love surveys and Jamie @ Perpetual Page Turner has come up with the 5th Annual End of Year Book Survey. I’ve already posted my top books of 2014 but how about everything else? Characters, series, quotes, ships, blogging life and what’s ahead, check out the end of year book survey for all of these and more.

2014 Reading Stats

Number Of Books You Read: 129

Number of Re-Reads: 1 (Angelfall)

Genre I Read the Most From: YA Contemporary

Best Book I Read This Year:

Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas – I talked about it in my top 10 2014 books here.

Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

Talon by Julie Kagawa – I was expecting more cool dragon mythology, but instead got a cliche paranormal romance.

Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read in 2014?

Four (A Divergent Collection) by Veronica Roth – I’ve answered this question before but I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did, especially after the series ending.

Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did) In 2014?

Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas – Sooo glad many people picked it up afterwards! It’s SO FANTASTIC.

Best series you started in 2014? Best Sequel of 2014? Best Series Ender of 2014?

throne_of_glass_covers heiroffire

Best series – Throne of Glass series! I can’t believe I held off so long, but I read all of the series to date this year.

Best Sequel – Cress by Marissa Meyer. One of the best books I read this year, I loved the introduction of Cress and her relationship with Captain Thorne.

Best Series Ender – Up From the Grave by Jeaniene Frost. A beautiful ending for a beloved, long running vampire couple series.

Favorite new author you discovered in 2014?

Krista & Becca Ritchie with their amazing, deeply constructed NA romances!

Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?

Not quite out of the comfort zone but Addicted To You by Krista & Becca Ritchie.

Book You Read In 2014 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?

I don’t really re-read books, so I probably won’t read any again next year.

Favorite cover of a book you read in 2014?

Searching for Sky by Jillian Cantor – How could you not love this cover?

Most memorable character of 2014?

Jubilee Chase of This Shattered World – I LOVE HER.

Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2014 to finally read?

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas – I was afraid to be disappointed after all the raves in the blogosphere, but luckily I had nothing to worry about.

Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2014?

“I love you…I have for years. And he hurt you and made me watch because he’s known how I felt, too. But if I asked you to pick, you’d choose Arobynn, and I. Can’t. Take. It.” – Sam to Celaena. It’s SO ROMANTIC.

Book That Shocked You the Most?

Breaking Butterflies by M. Anjelais – did not expect that creepy sociopath manipulation.

Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year

Rowan and Celaena had a really lovely, supportive friendship but we’ll have to see in the following year what happens 😉

Favorite Book You Read in 2014 From An Author You’ve Read Previously

Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover – She’s a winner that one, and probably the only author who has me staying up late at night because I just can’t put her books down. (Most attempts to read during bedtime send me snoozing within minutes).

Best 2014 debut you read?

The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski, because her writing is lush and beautiful.

Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read?

Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins, southern blonde belle with kickass paranormal powers, hell YEAH!

Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2014?

Bird by Crystal Chan tore my heart out and stomped on it.

Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)?

  1. Behind the Pages

Great recap! I can't believe you didn't read TOG until now! It is definitely one of the best series out there, each new book is just as good (if not better) than the last. I'm pretty sure you're the one that made me want to read DG so bad, and it was brilliant! Hmmm, I'm thinking that I really need to pick up a Colleen Hoover book asap, everyone seems to love her. 🙂

And oooh Maybe Someday was so good! I love how so many of our answers crossover.

I think the reason why we have different questions is because I took the ones from 2013 as Jamie hadn't posted the 2014 one yet 😀

I CAN'T WAIT FOR ACOTAR OMG I'm so jelly of all those Americans that have it already and HAVE FINISHED IT.

    • SO GOOD! Thanks for clearing up the different questions things, I have no idea which one I got but it was still a fun survey nonetheless. EVERYONE is excited about ACOTAR and I'm hearing awesome things!

  3. It's been such a massive year, I should say HAD. I can't believe it's 2015. Completely snuck up on me. Ohhhh, so many lovely books and I've finally joined the Throne of Glass fangirling too. Better late than never.

I don't think any book blogger in Australia has probably had a bigger and more fulfilling year than you have Jeann, such massive accomplishments! Onwards and upwards in 2015 poppet!

    Happy new year <3
My recent post My Blogaversary Giveaway and Year in Review

    • I can't believe it's 2015 as well, I've been saying "this year" and "2014" all over the place, oh well! YAY I am so glad you finally joined our fangirling, it's fun out here. Thank you so much Kelly, you've been one of my most supportive blogger friends ever! Happy New Year Kelly.

    • It's a really fun but long survey which required a bit of thinking, but will be good to look back at! Happy New Year cyn!

  4. Faye M.

God, I just know pretty much everyone is looking forward to that Maas book. I know I am! Haha. That cover of Searching for Sky is definitely fantastic, and the content even more so… I read that early this year and pretty much cried to sleep… It was THAT heartbreaking arghh!

I don't think I'll be able to recap my year, though 😉 All I know is it was full of downs book-wise, but even more full of ups as I was able to read so many quality books!
My recent post ARC Review: The Chosen Prince by Diane Stanley

    • Hehe I know, I keep on seeing it on WOW and these posts! Searching for Sky was completely heart wrenching wasn't it? IT WAS SO SAD and bad things just kept on happening! Recapping definitely did take a lot of work, but I'm glad you found some favourites Faye <3

    • Awesome, I'll check out your survey Cynthia. One of the Four novellas actually overlaps with the time he met Tris, so it was interesting for that!

    • I love all the blogger love for the Addicted series, every time I post about it I have people to talk to hehe. Dangerous Girls was absolutely mindblowing.

  5. Good news! I have Dangerous Girls AND Throne of Glass on my TBR Pile for next year… and I'm bound to read it. Plus, I recently snagged The Winner's Curse and Talon from the library…

Let's see how the latter of the two goes. 😀

    • YAY I hope you read both of them Sophia, seriously some of my favourite books ever. I'm not sure about Talon though…hope you enjoy it more than me.

  6. Dangerous girls has been on a couple of these surveys. Days of Blood and Starlight is on my to read list for next year too. I loved Daughter of Smoke and Bone! I got to meet Robin LaFevers and Kami Garcia this year which was awesome! I've never met any authors before. I love Laini Taylor's hair 😀
I'm scared of Breaking Butterflies but slightly intrigued… I hope you have a great bookish year in 2015 too!

My recent post 2014 Favorites: Covers

    • Absolutely, because Dangerous Girls is awesome lol! Wow, you met some really awesome authors, it's the best time isn't it?

  7. Lisa @ Lost in Lit

SO MUCH AWESOME!!! I asked for Dangerous Girls for Christmas, but, well, I did not receive it. That means I WILL be purchasing it for myself since I'm beyond antsy to read it.

I'm reading A Court of Thorns and Roses right now… it's awesome!

    Great post, girlie!! 🙂
My recent post Review: Addicted to You by Krista & Becca Ritchie

    • Ah, a shame you didn't get it but it means you'll have the excuse to buy it Lisa, I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it when you receive it. OMG WOW A Court of thorns and roses, you're getting me so excited about it!

  8. I'm still so disappointed by the fact almost everyone seems to dislike Talon 🙁 I had high expectations. It's good that you are finally part of the TOG fan club. Cress was amazing. I can't wait for Fairest & especially Winter 😀 I hated Panic so much.

    • I know, it's incredibly disappointing especially after all the hype hey? I still hear about it on Twitter and I'm all meh.

  9. kezia1098

Wow so many people are putting Throne of Glass or every book from the said series in their 2014 list! It's definitely making me wanna start the book sooner 😛 So curious about the hype! I hope it doesn't backfire and I end up disappointed with it though.

Same as you, I also need to catch up with Laini Taylor's books. Although I didn't love the first book as much as everyone else, I still wanna give the series a try and see if it somehow improves. I already got my hands on Days of Blood and Starlight 😛

The Winner's Curse is also on my to buy list! Aside from the gorgeous cover, fantasy has been one of my favorite genres so I cannot miss this one!

    Nice survey, Jean! <3
My recent post [Review] Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo

    • I know, I was exactly the same with Throne of Glass because all the hype does make me nervous that it won't live up to my expectations, but the hype is definitely out there for a reason. The Winner's Curse was an amazing book, although it was more historical romance than fantasy. I can't wait to catch up on Days of Blood and Starlight though and hope you get to read it as well!

  10. karawrites15

I need to catch up on the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, too. I read and loved the first book last year but haven't yet had a chance to pick up the sequels. I'm sure they're going to be just as good though. 🙂

  11. rlsharpe

I have so much love for Sarah J. Maas! I'm so glad you read the Throne of Glass series and loved it. I am so excited for A Court of Thorn and Roses, it can't come quick enough. I'm looking to clear my review pile too – especially my netgalley books. I'm dedicating January to getting the review copies out of the way so I can start reading all the books I got for my birthday and Christmas.

My recent post Christmas Book Haul.

    • She is freaking amazing isn't she, I can't believe it took me this year to read her stuff! Hopefully clear the review pile, not request any and read books on my shelf.

I really enjoyed reading Throne of Glass as well! I need to continue Crown of Midnight though 🙁 and I'm so JEALOUS you met Laini Taylor!! I love the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy :'( You'll enjoy Days of Blood and Starlight! It has more tension <3
My recent post Oh Christmas Tag!

    • YESS please read Crown of Midnight, it is even more awesome than Throne of Glass! But then again, I need to read DoBaS so that we're equal hehe

  13. Sam

I've seen the floating around the blogosphere and love it! It is too late his year, but I totally want to participate in this survey next year. And yes, ACOTAR looks awesome! Gosh, I needed it, like, yesterday. Dangerous Girls looks awesome, and I really need to read it soon. I don't think I've heard a single negative review!
My recent post End-of-The-Year Recap + Reflections @ Bookish Serendipity

  14. First off, I hope you're having a ball on your road trip Jeann! You deserve a good break 🙂 Happy holiday season <3

Between you and Siiri and everyone else, I'm feeling the Addicted pressure hahaha I swear I'm going to finish the book next year (next week hahaha) so I'm definitely excited! 😀

I NEED to read Dangerous Boys ASAP. I loved Girls so I don't know why I'm putting it off! And I have Panic…but I'm think I'm just going to gift it to a happier home. Because I don't think I would be able to stand it. I have a shaky relationship with Oliver's books. I obviously don't enjoy them but I keep coming back for some odd reason. It must be her writing.

YESSSSSS CATCH UP ON DAYS OF BLOOD. Out of the three books it was easily my favourite. It takes a darker turn but I still love it!

AND OMG JEANN WE NEED TO HUG RIGHT NOW. You are so incredibly sweet. I'm tearing up, just a little <333

    • Thank you so much Jess, I had a great time at my road trip but it's good to be back (and not cooped up in a car for hours!) I hope you do pick up Addicted and finish it, it was one of my most loved discoveries this year. YES I loved Dangerous Boys, although it's a lot different to Girls. Yeah, Panic is really dodgy and I literally cringed at what I was reading.

Awww Jess I love you and your blog! I consistently tell you but you are amazing lovely *hugs*

  15. Dangerous Girls–whoop! 😀 I've heard some negative things about Talon, but I still want a copy because hello, gorgeous. Cress was an awesome sequel, and I can't freaking wait for Winter. <3 I didn't enjoy Up From the Grave, but I still want to read more from the fabulous Jeaniene Frost. Krista & Becca Ritchie! <33 I also discovered them this year and went ahead and read all of their books. The Winner's Curse! 😀 Bahaha, definitely agree with your pick of Panic. It was a stupid read. Can't wait for A Court of Thorns and Roses. It sounds absolutely fab.

Sorry for the very incoherent comment, Jeann. xD Happy holidays! <33
My recent post A Deadly Christmas: Christmas! (+Bookhauls!)

    • I know, I'm super excited to see DG on so many other lists! The cover to Talon is beautiful, which adds to my disappointment. My gosh Winter is going to be super epic! I can't wait to read all of Krista & Becca Ritchie's books as well. Hehe Happy New Year Aimee! <3

  16. Gosh you read so many books! How do you find the time! 🙂 best habit to have, I think (making time for reading, that is).

I ordered Dangerous Girls the other day so I can see what the fuss is all about when I get to read it (hopefully soon!)

I hope you enjoy Days of Blood and Starlight, it's a great read! I'm yet to read the third book in the series myself, even though I've had it since it came out. The perils of book hoarding :/
My recent post 2015 Reading Challenge: TBR Pile

  17. HA! Me too for Dangerous Girls! I put that as my answer, and I think we've all done a marvellous job at pushing that one, right?! 😉 It is so so worth it.
I'm looking forward to ACOTAR too….oooobviously. XD
Loved this post and I love and adore reading round ups! Mine goes up tomorrow. Although, well, I admit it, mine is like 87% gifs, but hey. Gifs are fun.
Rereads are not my top priority, but I actually have quite a few books I plan to reread next year! I'm proud of me for considering it. lol :')
Yaaay for Laini Taylor too! I'm going to read DOGAM next year for sure. I still think book 1 was my favourite though.
My recent post Weekly Fury #39 || I am Batman…or Loki

    • YAYY it makes me so happy that it's on so many lists! These round ups were so much fun to read and really makes us appreciate the amazing bookish year. Good on you for considering the re-reads though.

  18. Gah, the more I see Dangerous Girls the more I feel guilty for still not getting my hands on it and reading it! I completely agree that I have no idea why I waited until this year to read Throne of Glass. People have been raving about it for ages! And The Winner's Curse. <3 And and Jess <3

  19. rabbitearsblog

Awesome survey! I can't wait to hear your opinions on Days of Blood and Starlight! It was a fantastic book!

  20. Eugenia

Aww thanks for the shout-out lovely! <3
This is a great way to recap the year in bookish terms. I found that I've read a lot more YA contemporary than anything else as well, and Dangerous Girls is definitely up there as a top favourite. Maybe Someday was amazing too – Colleen Hoover tugs at the heartstrings every single time with her novels. I was lucky enough to meet Laini Taylor as well this year, so I definitely need to get on with the series! Thanks for sharing, now I'm reminded that I really need to get reading Throne of Glass!
