Indulgence Insider #33 – Arkham Knight & June Wrap Up

Indulgence Insider is our version of Stacking the Shelves, Bought, Borrowed & Bagged and the Sunday Post, bringing you this week’s haul, bookish news and discussion posts from around the blogosphere!

It’s been a pretty busy week at work, especially with working all last weekend in Townsville. It was such a beautiful, tropical and warm destination though, it felt like a wonderful getaway.

My guest reviewer Kristy is heading to the USA for a holiday! She won’t be posting for a while until she’s back. I’m looking for more Aussie-based guest reviewers though who would like to read & review some of my review copies, so if you are interested please get in touch by emailing happyindulgence@gmail.com

This week I also got extremely obsessed with Asti & Kelley’s Bookish Games. I had no idea it was so intense!

My 3 year blogoversary is coming up next week. Time flies when you’re having fun 😀

I picked up my Collector’s edition Batman: Arkham Knight though, which came with an awesome statue. The PC game is broken, but my PC isn’t good enough to play it at the moment XD. My Fallout 4 Collector’s Edition got cancelled though, because Game.co.uk doesn’t ship overseas which makes me so sad…I wish they said that when I ordered it =/

Review copies

paperweight manuscript

I feel so honoured to have received a manuscript copy of Paperweight by Meg Haston! The publisher ran out of review copies and sent me this instead. Thanks Hot Key Books!

reviewcopies5_7_2015

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews – There’s been a lot of cancer/terminal illness books recently, but this one sounds like it has a great humour about it.

Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson – Having read and loved Since You’ve Been Gone, I’m looking forward to another summery read.

Dumplin by Julie Murphy – I’ve heard great things about this book and the bigger character.

Wicked Embers by Keri Arthur – I like paranormal reads, but this one is the 2nd in a series I haven’t read :S

When You’re Back by Abbi Glines – I haven’t read any of the Rosemary Beach series yet, but is it something that I can read standalone?

Life with a Sprinkle of Glitter by Louise Pentland – Looks like a fun book with some handy tips.

Thank you to Allen and Unwin, Simon and Schuster Australia, Penguin Random House, Walker Books Australia, and Hachette for these review copies.

Bought

bought july 2015

The Iron Trial by Holly Black & Cassandra Clare – I haven’t heard many favourable things, but seeing as both authors are visiting Australia in November, I thought I better pick up a copy to be signed.

Cruel Beauty & Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge – I absolutely LOVED the first one, still have to read the 2nd one, so I invested in the beautiful hardcover editions.

Borrowed

noneoftheabove

None of the Above by I.W. Gregorio – I love diverse reads!

Swapped

Reading Update

challengerdeep royalwedding thrive addicted howtheymet

  • Challenger Deep was a very metaphorical book, which explored schizophrenia in a honest way. 4 stars.
  • Royal Wedding is the first adult installment of Princess Diaries! Such a fun read so far!
  • Thrive was my least favourite Addicted novel, which covered the last 2 Calloway sisters events. 4 stars.
  • How They Met and Other Stories was a LBGT short story compilation, pretty meh. 2 stars.

  1. What a great haul! The books we have in common that I am really looking forward to are Paperweight and None of the Above! I really do want to try the Cruel Beauty series as well, and Iron Trial so I can't wait to know what you think of those! Personally I LOVE Michael Grant. I hope you love his book!

Sorry to hear that GAME doesn't ship overseas 🙁 I can't play Batman because alas pc gamer here and I refuse to put money into a game that isn't finished properly, I hope you enjoy it though! 😀

Wow, you read a ton of books! And had such a great haul! I read An Ember in the Ashes recently and loved it 😀

  4. littlebookstar

Woot woot advance happy blogoversary! My blogoversary is this month too but during the last week 😀 *high five*! That's awesome that they sent you the manuscript! I'm going to read Paperweight in 2 weeks with another blogger so fingers crossed I end up loving it. I haven't read a book that focused on eating disorder so I'm really interested to read it. I loved Cruel Beauty, too! I haven't read Crimson Bound but I really hope it's as awesome as the first one.

  5. WOW, that's quite a haul, Jeann! I loved both None of the Above and Paperweight. While they are very different, they both deal with important subjects, and it was great to learn more about both 🙂
I hope you'll enjoy all your new books.
Have a fantastic week and happy reading.

  6. Three years already! Are you sure? 😀 It felt like only a few months ago you turned two. Wow, time is flying by isn't it. Ooh, what an awesome haul of goodies! I can't wait to see what you think of Dumplin, going to grab a copy when it's released (is it out yet), I've heard it's really funny and a positive take on body image too. It's just what the genre needs. Thanks for sharing Jeann <3 *grabs Cruel Beauty and runs*

  7. Aw thanks so much for mentioning me!! You're the best 🙂

Oh my goodness- I hadn't seen the back cover for QoS before, it is GORGEOUS! Congrats on the 3 years next week- that is phenomenal! And the BOOKS- so many amazing books! None of the Above was really great. And I think Dumplin sounds amazing too! I really hope you enjoy all of these, and have a fabulous week!

    • NP Shannon! I know, it just came out and we're all raving about Celaena's dress! Thank you, so many amazing books I get a bit overwhelmed.

  8. Eugenia

I can't wait to read Royal Wedding – it definitely looks like an enjoyable read! Thanks again for participating in #booksfortradeAU Jeann, I know those books have found a good home with you 🙂 Second Chance Summer looks really good – I'm definitely a fan of Morgan Matson now after Since You've Been Gone as well so it'll be interesting to see how that book goes. Hope you have a great week <3

    • It was a really fun book Genie! BooksforTradeAU is such a good idea 🙂 I'm looking forward to reading Morgan Matson's other book! You too love!

  9. So many lovely books this week, Jeann! I REALLY hope you love None of the Above. It's one of the best books I've read so far this year. It's incredible because of so many reasons, but be prepared to be confronted with how horrible people can be in the face of diversity.

Happy reading with all these lovely books, and I hope you like your new Batman game ^.^ <3
My recent post Books for Mail + Simply Sunday (#23)

    • I know, after seeing your raves I decided I had to read it! It sounds incredible and so diverse. Thank you hun!

  10. I enjoyed Crimson Bound ten times more than Cruel Beauty! But yeah – those covers are STUNNING <3 If I had liked Cruel Beauty just a bit more, I would have kept it around so they would be next to each other on my shelves lol.

I’ve been interested in The Iron Trial – looking forward to seeing what you think of it! And None of the Above was GREAT. It definitely opened my eyes to intersex conditions and how it’s different than transgender.

I’m looking forward to reading Challenger Deep this month, though I’m a bit concerned as I struggle with metaphor at times. We’ll see how that goes 😛

    *dies over THAT DRESS again*
My recent post Weekly Update #87 | Birthday Haul, part one!

    • Glad to hear Kayla, I loved Cruel Beauty so much, it was a 5 star read for me. I've heard variable things, but I'm obviously expecting to love it. I'm not sure about the Iron Trial, have heard how it's a HP rip off but how could I not get it? Challenger Deep is one big metaphor, I dunno. I loved it 😉

  11. I always have wanted to give Oh the books their Bookish Games a try, but I would like to participate when it's a book I do know, so I am still waiting for that. It does sound like a lot of fun. Nice book haul you got this week. I've seen some of those around the blogospehere recently. I heard great things about Cruel beauty and Crimson Bound, although as far as I heard Crimson Bound is not the second book in the series, but a standalone. I hope you have a great week en enjoy your new books!
My recent post Sunday Post #133

    • They are so much fun, but super intense! I wasn't prepared for that! I love Lunar Chronicles, so decided to jion this one. I'm looking forward to reading Crimson Bound, because I loved the first. Thank you hun!

  12. danielleisbusyreading

Great new haul, girl! Grab some tissues for Second Chance Summer! Excited to see what you think of Dumplin'.
Yay for your third anniversary! That's crazy exciting. 😀

  13. Grace @ RebelMommyBB

Gah you got so many books! So many I can't wait to read – especially Dumplin!! Can't wait to hear what you think. I just finished Finding Audrey and thought it was adorable!
My recent post Weekly Rewind ~ 7.5.15

    • Yeah, they tend to pile up after a few weeks! Dumplin sounds great. Glad to hear you liked Finding Audrey as well!

  14. Boy am I glad to have missed all the drama that's just gone in the community, and I'm refusing to check out any arguments because I don't know and wasn't involved, you know? Still, feels like there's always something going on, and surely it has to stop right about now.. Anyway, I've been AWOL this week, with my part of BBB closing, and me spending aaaaages at my best friends, but it's been a great week – chilled, calm, quiet, easy to figure, no reading, so much chill-time, it's something I would recommend for sure. Loving your Arkham Knight pack, I only wish I could have a copy myself.. Have a great week Jeann! 😀
My recent post The Unpopular Opinions Tag | Baa Baa Black Sheep

    • I totally know what you mean Amanda, I didn't want to get too involved either, so I just read it briefly. Glad to hear you've had lots of chill time, you definitely needed it hun! Have a great one too Amanda 🙂

  15. Yay for all the new books, I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of Dumplin' it sounds great! Paperweight is next on my reading list, it's neat that Hot Key Books sent you that instead of saying no 🙂

It's so weird they cancelled your order, after letting you order internationally :/ you'd think they just wouldn't allow it. Ugh. I guess a re-shipper wouldn't work either at this stage? 🙁
My recent post Showcase Sunday #28

    • I know, they just cancelled it and said a refund was coming. It's so stupid, they shouldn't even allow that to go through on their website. I guess I'm just going to take my losses 🙁 I have heard great things about Dumplin!

  16. Kara Terzis

Wow! Three years of blogging??? CONGRATS! That's wonderful. Ohhh, aren't they Rosamund Hodge books SO PRETTY? I own Cruel Beauty, and I ordered Crimson Bound the other week — hopefully it'll arrive tomorrow. ^_^

  17. inlibrisveritas

Love the statue! My boyfriend is incredibly excited about the Fallout collectors edition. It sucks that you had to cancel though, the Pipboy looks awesome. I really need to get back into instagram on my book account…I sort of forgot about it.
My recent post Sunday Post (160)

    • I knoww, I loved it as well, but was disappointed to hear about the game issues! I'm sad I missed out with the Pipboy, but it doesn't seem to fit my phone anyway.

  18. Omg, that dress of Celaena's. She is entirely too fabulous. Like she takes fabulous to a whole new level. *happy sigh*
AHHHHHHH HAVE YOU READ MESSENGER OF FEAR?? I adored that one. And I was pretty shocked at the ending of The Iron Trial (although it kinda didn't impress me all up, but still that ending). So awesome you were able to have a little getaway too, amongst work. 😉

    • I knowww, it's gorgeous isn't it? I have to read Messenger of Fear still, can't wait to read it! Thanks Cait! It was mainly just work with a nice view/weather XD

    • Thank you Kimba! I loved the Others definitely, it's amazing! Just waiting on the paperback for Vision in Silver as well.

  19. Lisa @ Lost in Lit

15 books in June is AWESOME! That's basically a book very two days, which is totally impressive to me. I'm not sure how many I read in June, but I doubt it's that many. Great job! 🙂
My recent post Lisa’s Weekly Recap ~ 7.4.15

    • Thanks Lisa! I think I binge read this month, tried to read a lot of the shorter review copies on my shelf too. Have a lovely week!

    • I knowww, aren't they the prettiest things! The awesome covers and story help as well. I loved Cruel Beauty, hope you enjoy.

  20. Jean I don't know what I love more…you collectors edition Batman or your epic book haul. THEY JUST BOTH SEEM AMAZING. Hope you have a lovely week 🙂
