Video review: Mockingjay Part 2 Movie

November 21, 2015 by Jeann @ Happy Indulgence | Books, Features, Movie Reviews, Videos

So I watched The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 last night and I had some very convoluted thoughts about the movie. On one hand it fit the tone of the book and the series, but on the other, there were a few too many plotholes and conveniences for the sake of dragging out the movie.

I attempt to explain my thoughts in my first movie review on youtube:

Not sure if that was any help but I’d definitely lower my expectations if you’re planning on seeing it!

  1. I haven't seen it yet but I'm probably just gonna wait until the DVD comes out. I read Mockingjay more than three years ago so I can't remember much about it but when I saw the movie (part 1) I was fine by it. I do remember how dumbfounded I was by the book's ending though.

    • Yeah, it has been a long time since I read the book and I wasn't too impressed by it then, and it's the same feeling I get with the movie here.

  2. I um, might have been talking to you while I watched this. Ask Val 😉 So here's my two cents: I think you're completely right, it WAS messy- as was the book. And I could be wrong, because this stuff is obviously subjective, but I felt like there was a reason for it? Like, I also hated how certain scenes (deaths) were quick and not given a ton of afterthought, but in the situation, there wasn't time- if they had stopped, well, they'd have all been dead. In the book, there is a moment of pause after The One Thing We All Hate, where Katniss almost has a mini-memorial in her head- but I guess that couldn't really have been done on screen. There WAS a point where they were in Tigris's shop where she is upset- and her voice breaks, and you can see her pain- I think Jennifer did an AMAZING job there.

ALSO, I noticed a lot of these things more the second time I saw it. The first time, I actually felt a bit like you did. But seeing it the second time, I really noticed all the little nuances.

OH and the tar thing was different in the book, too- not so convenient. There were actually a few movie conveniences, I agree. I guess those are some of the sacrifices you have to make when making a movie of a book, since we don't have the benefit of Katniss's thoughts? I think this movie may have been the truest adaptation yet, which I was thrilled about. OH- those zombies were lizard mutts 😉 (I um, am on my 10th re-read of the stupid thing, and have a bit of an obsession, clearly.) But I am glad you liked it, even if you didn't love it. AND I am glad I had someone to talk about it with- I feel like no one else has seen it yet!

    • Yeah, somehow in the book there was a lot more impact for some reason, whereas we barely had enough time in the book. Jennifer and the rest of the cast did a great job as always, it couldn't have been easy to convey that emotion in that way. But yeah, I think it's been such a long time since I've read it that I can't really remember so I can't really say how faithful it was as an adaptation, which people say it was done well so that's good.

Thanks for clarifying the thing about the lizard mutts! Gosh in the book I thought they were dogs or something, so it was a surprise to see them like that in the movie. Yeah I'm actually surprised by how quiet the hype has been about this – kind of expected more tbh!

  3. Hahahah I was watching your video with Shannon and she has a lot to say so be expecting that comment!

I also haven't read the book in a LONG time, but I felt that the movie was very, very true to the book. Except those huge walls closing in on the team, and the tar, and the flashing laser thingys. And I hated that there was NO TIME to reflect on the deaths, but that was like the book too. I hated that it happened that way in the book, but I do have to admit that I teared up a lot when Katniss was in her home thinking about Prim, and seeing the cat. That was so sad.

I'm really glad you enjoyed the movie though Jeann! Even though it seemed really messy to you 🙂

    • Ahhh I'm glad Shannon commented, definitely a lot to discuss! Yeah, I was the same, I haven't read it in so many years so I don't really know how faithful it was. But yeah, I wish there were times when there was more impact, the end was definitely sad but tbh I was a bit more concerned with how she threw the glass at the cat and nearly hit it?! Lol

I'm not going to watch your review until I've seen the movie myself (no offence, but I just can never do that), but I'm so super scared what the movie is going to be like! I still haven't seen Part 1, because… well, I don't eve really have a good excuse. I love the first two films, but I was angry that they split the last one into two parts and they changed a key element of the story because Collins "regretted" it or whatever and just never got around to it. But I must soon!

  5. I am so glad to hear you enjoyed it Jeann! I've been really busy so I haven't had time to see it, but I am so happy to hear that you found it was a welldone adaption. Definitely going to remember to bring tissues for when I do go and see it – it sounds as emotional as the book was. Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous review! <3

I'm planning to see it tomorrow afternoon, so I'm hoping to at least be impressed. Mockingjay is the only book of the trilogy that I read, and that was after I had already seen the first two movies, and I wanted to go ahead and get to the ending. I didn't like how the book ended but am looking to compare this pt 2. I wasn't really impressed with pt1, as it wasboring as hell until the ending of the movie.
