Indulgence Insider is our version of Stacking the Shelves, Bought, Borrowed & Bagged and the Sunday Post, bringing you this week’s haul, bookish news and discussion posts from around the blogosphere!

This week I started my new job and it’s going to be pretty hectic, there’s lots of work to do while learning at the same time. As expected, I won’t have as much time to do blog things while I get used to my new role. During this month, Aila will be in exam mode and Jenna will be travelling to Florida (and meeting Aila!!! *screams*) and then I’ll be meeting her in Sydney while I’m there for TeenCon 2016. Thankfully we plan for these things at Happy Indulgence, so while we won’t be as responsive as usual, you’ll still find some great content and scheduled posts here. I’m also more active on Twitter and Instagram as well.

Anyway, I’ll make sure to update you guys when I get the chance. I’ve been so drained that all I’ve been doing is binge watching Unbreakable: Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix which is so hilarious, light and random. I have binge watched the entire Season 1 and half of Season 2 already. I also watched Captain America Civil War yesterday, which was pretty good with lots of action and cameos! The storyline was a bit forced though, and there wasn’t much of a back story behind the villain. I preferred Winter Soldier, but at least it was better than Age of Ultron.

Oh, I also finally died after an intensive 8 weeks of playing Bookish Games. I was an evil mafia member so pretty much everything I said was built on lies upon lies, which was actually pretty stressful if you think about it. Anyway, I’ve crafted another reputation for myself as the “evil Spackle lady” which I’m actually quite proud of.

Today I’ll be heading into the ABC Radio for the next session of OzYay on Air! I’m looking forward to catching up with Rhianna and Sarah, no matter what we have going on in our lives it’s always fun to unite and talk about Aussie YA books – my favourite. I really enjoyed The Things I Didn’t Say but had a few criticisms about Dreaming the Enemy. If you get the chance, tune in tonight on Rhianna Patrick’s show at 7pm AEST on ABC radio, via the ABC radio app or http://www.abc.net.au/radio (internationals can tune in online too!). Apparently there might be sport on, so listening in on the app or online is the best way to go.

Last time we received a few tweets for our show too which was awesome because they were read out online! So if you happen to be listening to the show, I’d love it if you tweeted us at #ABCRhi! As always, I’ll post the link to the recording afterwards on the blog.

BOOK HAUL

bookhaul1may16

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes – I bought a copy to see what everyone’s been raving about, plus the movie trailer looks awesome.
The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin – I swapped this with Ely via #booksfortradeAU, as I haven’t read it yet and I’ve only got the first book.

I also picked up the following books at the library, not sure if I’ll get around to them but I couldn’t help myself:

The Love That Split the World by Emily Henry – I’ve heard so much about this, even with mixed reviews I’m kinda curious.
My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga – I need to review this on Edelweiss still and Jenna loved it, so looking forward to it.
Forbidden by Kimberley Griffiths Little – Aila loved this book which she reviewed here.

READING UPDATE

winnerskiss  dreamingtheenemy

  • I’m really not enjoying The Winner’s Kiss so far. There’s so much angst and a manufactured reason for melodrama, and it’s a long book so I just want them to get on with it. Hopefully I like it more after I finish it.
  • I read Aussie YA title Dreaming the Enemy for radio and I found it to be confusing and disjointed. I gave it 2 stars.

BOOKISH NEWS

  • Read Renee Abdieh’s short story, Mirror and the Maze from The Wrath and the Dawn here.
  • The Girl on the Train trailer came out which looks deliciously creepy and faithful to the book.
  • Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson is turning into a board game!
  • Sign the LoveOzYA petition on the Productivity Commission’s recent suggested changes to writer’s intellectual property and sourcing books from overseas if publishers do not provide books by 14 days. How is this supporting the local industry?! Isn’t it horrifying to know that a book that you wrote, isn’t yours after 15-20 years?!

DISCUSSION POSTS

  1. Thank you so much Shannon! It was fyn but so stressful for those 8 weeks, particularly since we were surviving for so long! It was hard to keep the lie going and I think I just cracked in the end lol. We're all talking about our respective trips and very excited to meet each other!

Let me know what you thought of The Winner's Kiss, it was a frustrating read for me. I'm glad to hear you loved those books, I've heard mixed reviews for Love that Split the World.

  2. I know, I only started taking notice of Me Before You since the movie trailer came out and realised everyone was raving about it. Yeah, I was a black sheep when it came to The Winner's Kiss.

  3. I've been tempted to read Me Before You myself & I know I definitely need to jump on the hype train when my sister, who never touches a book (not that's a bad thing), has previewed the book already. Plus, Sam Claflin is bae. Seriously adore your rainbow shelves, Jeann! Your next few weeks sound exciting but also slightly manic! hahaha. Have fun!
My recent post Blog Tour: The Flirty '30s

    • Thanks Peach! My rainbow shelves are my pride and joy hehe. That's exciting that your sister read the book too and enjoyed it!

    • Thanks Jen! Yup I've been on it for a few months now, it's an absolute blast! Looking forward to reading it, I'll probably be an emotional mess.

  4. Greg

Gah you've seen Civil War? I'm jealous it doesn't start for almost a week here. Glad to hear it was good though. 🙂 I've been curious about Girl Against the Universe since seeing an interview with Paula Stokes. Might have to get that one.

Your radio show sounds fun, and I'm kinda excited about the Girl on the Train trailer.
My recent post Sunday Post #140

    • Oh man, it's weird how we have different release dates for movies! I'm definitely curious about GIrl Against the Universe as well. Thanks Greg, I hope you enjoyed the trailer! Can't wait for the movie.

  5. Hehe thanks Geraldine! Yup, Jenna will be meeting us both! I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed it, I've heard heaps of hype about it and looking forward to picking it up!

  6. You were so evil during the Bookish Games hahaha! I was so surprised to see you like this because I'm so used to you being super sweet. I kept thinking "Who are you and have you eaten Jeann?" :'D

I really hope you love Me Before You! Although do keep tissues at hand. You're going to need them. ♥
My recent post Goodbye Bookshelf Reflections!

    • Hahaha I know, everyone was so frustrated at me LOL! I was like hey, I never chose to be mafia! Anyway, it was fun but I'm glad that stress is over for me at least! Great tip on Me Before You – I'll be sure to just read it at home and not public transport XD

  7. It seems like you're going to be busy, but at least you're meeting with other bookish people and awesome authors right? I don't even have any bookish events in my country *sobs* Anyway I'm glad you liked Civil War! I also really loved it that I immediately re-watched cap 1 and 2 on the next day. It officially beats The Winter Soldier by small points! I hope your next read would be better though, since it seems like you're having a not-so-good reading time 😀
My recent post Captain America: Civil War Movie Review

    • Absolutely, it's going to be awesome and so much fun?! No rest for the wicked. Aww, I'm so glad you liked Civil War too! The Cap franchise is my favourite. I actually preferred Winter Soldier because of the story – plus Stark and Rogers going after each other was so heart breaking.

  8. Ahh it sound like you're definitely going to be keeping busy in May!! I hope everything you have planned goes smoothly and it's not too exhausting ♥

Great haul, too! I have no plans on reading Me Before You, but I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it!
My recent post Monthly Wrap Up: April

    • Thank you so much Lauren! I'll have to take some time out just chilling out I think, rather than trying to blog frantically. Looking forward to reading it!

  9. Eugenia

It sounds like things are really busy for your Jeann – but I'm sure you'll get through it! <3 Sad to hear you aren't completely loving The Winner's Kiss so far – I haven't started it yet but have high hopes since I loved the other two books so much. Hope everything goes well for you this week 🙂
My recent post Waiting on Wednesday: A Court of Mist and Fury

    • Definitely, I think it gets that way sometimes! Thanks for the vote of confidence. Yeah, I'm putting off reading because of The Winner's Kiss, it frustrates me everytime I pick it up.
