In her first graphic novel, bestselling author Marissa Meyer extends the world of the Lunar Chronicles with a brand-new,action-packed story about Iko, the android with a heart of (mechanized) gold. When rogue packs of wolf-hybrid soldiers threaten the tenuous peace alliance between Earth and Luna, Iko takes it upon herself to hunt down the soldiers' leader. She is soon working with a handsome royal guard who forces her to question everything she knows about love, loyalty, and her own humanity. With appearances by Cinder, Cress, Scarlet, Winter, and the rest of the Rampion crew, this is a must-have for fans of the bestselling series.

If there’s anything that can pull me out of a reading slump, it would be anything related to The Lunar Chronicles, one of my favourite series based on reimagined sci-fi fairytale characters. I’m glad that even upon the conclusion of the series, there’s a short story collection (Stars Above), and a graphic novel series to carry on the Cinder’s legacy.

While we do see our favourite characters in the book, Wires and Nerve primarily follows the ship’s android Iko on her adventures of crime fighting the Queen’s wolf army who is causing havoc back on Earth. I loved how she finds a purpose for herself beyond obsessing about the Commonwealth Balls and daydreaming about Emperor Kai. Being an android who can’t get hurt, she’s the perfect soldier especially with her feisty attitude and her protective nature.

Iko accompanies Cress and Thorne as they prepare for the Gala Ball and use their hacking skills to identify the rest of the wolves. I loved seeing each and every character as they’ve continued on after the series, from Cinder’s unlikely rule, to Cress and Thorne’s adorable travels, and Princess Winter’s new role as the Ambassador of the Earth. We sadly don’t see much of Scarlet and Wolf though, as they’re playing house back in France, but they at least make an appearance in the novel.

The new technology that has been developed following Queen Levana’s rule makes sense, preventing people from being mind controlled. Written by Marissa Meyer, the developments in the story really do make sense, flowing on from the Lunar Chronicles. It’s sad to hear that the crew haven’t been united since the end of the series, but I was really glad to see how they were travelling in this book.

If you’re a Lunar Chronicles fan, Wires and Nerve won’t disappoint as it follows the events of the series. Iko is a great character to follow as she’s completely badass and hilarious, and you’ll love learning about how the other characters are travelling. I also loved the visual treatment of the graphic novel and seeing the characters literally come to life in illustration. While I wasn’t an immediate fan of the art style of the book, it really does grow on you as it really suits the narrative.

  1. I so hope they’ll publish it in France, it looks awesome ! Your review made me want to go back to the Lunar Chronicles, I’ve kinda DNFed Scarlet at some point around the middle but I think I’ll read it again 🙂

    • Yesss, I hope you get the chance to pick it up Rachel! I’m so glad to hear that you’re keen to pick up the series a lot. Scarlet wasn’t my favourite, but it gets way better in Cress and Winter!

Yay, I'm glad this was able to pull you out of your slump! Everyone does need Iko in their lives! This was such a fun read and I loved getting to see the whole hang again (: lovely review, Jeann!

  3. I'm not huge on graphic novels so I was debating whether or not I should read this, but you've sold me Jeann. It sounds like such a great complement to the series. And Iko is always fabulous. xD Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous review! <3

  4. Ooh I'm glad to see you enjoyed this one. I actually have it on my library list to check out if I happen to find myself back there because I was curious about it. I don't think I realized it was about Iko, but I don't mind that at all because she was a lot of and fun and like you said, it'd be nice to see a side of her where she's not just obsessing about Prince and the Balls (because she definitely did a lot of that in the other books). I think I'll try and find my way there in the next week or so to pick it up. I'm really trying to stick to books I already own for my TBR so I can finish them all (or at least try, haha) before I move to London, but I feel like graphic novels are always an exception because they're fairly quick to read.

    • Yesss, I loved seeing her grow on her own as a character away from Cinder, because she has the potential to be so baddass. I’ve been terrible with my tBR, completely ignoring it and I keep on buying new things!

  5. I KNOW! I was dubious as well because of the art style but oh my gosh it was so perfect. I loved the facial expressions and Thorne and Cress were the best.

  6. I can't believe I still haven't read this series. I picked up Cinder a few years ago but just couldn't get into it at the time. I know how much you've loved the series and so glad you enjoyed this one as well. I must pick it up soon. Wonderful review <3

  7. I don't read a lot of graphic novels but this one has been on my radar from the moment I heard about it. I was hoping Iko would get her time to shine in some form and I think her graphic novel adventure is fitting. I'd read anything that features the Lunar Chronicles characters so I am definitely going to read this one soon. 😀

    • Yay, I'm so glad to hear that you're keen on picking this up Lois! Wires and Nerve was such a fun departure from the novels, I loved it so much especially following Iko on her adventure.

  8. I somehow hadn't heard of this one! I'm my favorite character! I'm not sure how I feel about it being a graphic novel but I'm glad Iko finally got her own story!
