Successful Books Pushed By My Co-Bloggers

July 15, 2017 by Aila J. | Chatterbox, Features

Hello everyone!

If you’ve been following this blog long enough, you’ll recognize that Jeann, Jenna and I have varying tastes in books (although there are obvious overlaps of the more amazing ones). In this post, I’ll be highlighting some of the successful books (trust me, there were some that weren’t as successful) that Jeann and Jenna have pushed onto my TBR.

Books That Took Some Prodding

The first genre that would pop in my head when asked if I have a favorite is SFF. Of course, I read other books in a good balance, but SFF stories always have a special place in my heart. Jeann’s love of thrillers and urban fantasy, as well as Jenna’s bent towards contemporaries, have opened my eyes to a wider range of books.

1. Night Huntress Series by Jeanniene Frost | Jeann’s Review

I really only read urban fantasies once in a while but I really liked the world that Jeanniene Frost wrote for this series, and the snarky characters and steamy romances. I ended up binging most of the books in the series because of Jeann!

2. Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor | Jeann’s Review

This is Jeann’s fave book of 2017 so far, and can you believe that it took me and Jenna months to get to it? I basically told myself I better finish this so Jeann wouldn’t be so disappointed (HAH) and I’m glad I did! Laini Taylor’s previous trilogy wasn’t a hit for me, but this one was.

#OZYA Books

31359509 Aussie YA Reviews: Yellow by Megan Jacobson & Frankie by Shivaun Plozza 29753111

Since Jeann and Jenna are based in Australia and me in America, they’re always ready to recommend some OZYA books my way. (Especially with Jeann reading so much for #OZYay! on ABC Radio, which you can tune in here.) Also, I gotta give a shout out to Jenna for gifting me with these lovelies and making them accessible to my American eyes.

3. Freedom Swimmer by Wai Chim | Jeann’s Review

I started this because of Jeann’s review, and its setting in historical China, during the Cultural Revolution. Chim brings an upfront and personal look on the villagers of a small valley during this time and the mindsets of two young men, and their yearnings for freedom. I cried while reading, it was so good.

4. Frankie by Shivaun Plozza | Jenna’s Review | My Review

Jenna really liked this one and the contemporary feels + gorgeous cover was enough to get my attention. I thought it was a really fun contemporary with phenomenal character development. Frankie is a bit of an unlikable heroine whose growth was really realistic and well-paced.

5. Words of Deep Blue by Cath Crowley | Jenna’s Review | My Review

With a small indie bookstore at its heart, the exploration of friendship and family, and a best-friends-to-more kind of romance, Words of Deep Blue really brought out the emotions. It made me feel things from extreme sadness to all the sweet and fluffy feels.

6. When Michael Met Mina by Randa Abdel-Fattah | Jeann’s Review | My Review

This book follows the POV’s of Mina, an Afghan refugee, and Michael, who learns how you can’t be neutral on a moving train. It tackles political issues with direct and frank statements, while interweaving a slow romance with characters who grow and learn.

Thank goodness for co-bloggers to introduce me to a list of new books I would not have read before! What kind of books surprised you when pushed by other readers?

  1. I haven’t read any of these, but I read on Paperfury’s blog that the main character in Strange the Dreamer breaks his nose by walking into a wall while reading a book and now I have a desire to read it.

  2. I love how all of our tastes in books are so varied but we also love the same thing as well! I’m so glad you finally read Strange, it’s so brilliant omg. And Freedom Swimmer and When Michael Met Mina are sooo good!
