Our Most Anticipated Reads of 2019

January 8, 2019 by Jenna | Books, Features

Having failed my Goodreads challenge for two years in a row, I am determined to get back on track with my reading. I did some research (for the first time in a long time) on upcoming 2019 releases and now I’m extremely excited for what my reading year is going to look like. We decided to compile a list of our most anticipated 2019 releases and we’re excited to hear about the books that you guys are highly anticipating too!

Jenna

Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare

I don’t think this comes as a surprise to anybody. I’ve been a long term fan of all of Cassie Clare’s Shadowhunter books and I’m especially excited for Chain of Gold to come out because it is the sequel series to The Infernal Devices, which is one of my favourite series of all time. While The Dark Artifaces was good… and The Mortal Instruments was, on average, not that bad… I’m really looking forward to being in the Victorian England era and getting to be with some of my favourite characters again.

The Toll by Neal Shusterman

I don’t know if this is cheating since there is no official release date for this book yet (though Goodreads does have an anticipated release date of 2019), but I absolutely cannot wait for the third and final book in the Arc of a Scythe trilogy. Scythe and Thunderhead were my top two favourite books of 2018 and I am dying to know what happens next in the series. As soon as this book is out, I will be picking up the audiobook and bingeing it!

King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo

This is undoubtedly a book that all three of us are looking forward to and it’s so close to being released!! I am a huge fan of the Six of Crows trilogy and I also didn’t really dislike The Grisha trilogy as much as everyone else seems to. Regardless of whether we were a fan of what went down in The Grisha trilogy or not, I think we can all agree that Nikolai is awesome and definitely deserves a book of his own.

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell

I binge read Carry On when it was first released and it remains, to this day, one of my favourite books of all time. In fact, Carry On brings fond memories because it was the first ever discussion review the three of us ever did! I have no idea what Wayward Son is going to be about but I don’t particularly care as long as I can have more SnowBaz in my life. This is another one that doesn’t have a set release date yet so I’m crossing my fingers that we won’t have to wait too long for it.

99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne

I absolutely loved The Hating Game when it came out in 2016 and I’ve been waiting for Sally Thorne’s next book ever since. Luckily there’s not too much longer to wait and I am really looking forward to diving into what I hope will be my next favourite fluffy romance.

Jeann

The Dragon Republic by R. F. Kuang

Seeing as The Poppy War was my favourite read of 2018, I’m definitely eagerly anticipating the sequel! I need to find out about Rin’s new goals to overcome the vengeful gods in this book.

Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Of course I’m highly anticipating the next co-authored sci-fi book from my favourite authors. It sounds like an amazing space opera with some intriguing characters, and I can’t wait!

Four Dead Queens by Astrid Scholte

The blurb for this YA fantasy sounds amazing, and it’s from an Aussie author as well! I love the sound of the four queens ruling different quadrants with the forecast of them dying.

The Boy Who Steals Houses by C. G. Drews

I adored the tension in Cait’s debut, A Thousand Perfect Notes and this one sounds like it will break my heart just like her first one!

Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim

Asian fantasy is my jam, and when I heard this was a cross between Mulan and Project Runway, I was completely sold.

Aila

Blood Heir by Amélie Wen Zhao

This book has a pretty long blurb but let me try to sum it up: manipulating elements, fugitive princess that can control blood, bargain with handsome but mysterious crime lord, monster vs hero dynamic. What’s not to love?! Supposedly it is an Anastasia retelling too, which I am loving. That movie is so underrated y’all. Anyway, I am 100% here for all of that synopsis and I really hope it doesn’t disappoint.

Last of Her Name by Jessica Khoury

Another retelling of the same fairy tale! I really adore Khoury’s writing, and I’ve followed her books since she came to my high school years ago to talk about her debut. Her newest is an Anastasia-retelling in space (which, coincidentally, is quite popular nowadays. See: HEART OF IRON by Ash Poston and LIFELIKE by Jay Kristoff). They’ve all been a hit, and I have no doubt this space opera adventure will be, too. (I’m weak for science fictions y’all)

We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal

I have been following Hafsah since she was a blogger herself (and designer!), and I absolutely cannot wait for this release. The snippets she posts on Twitter are always a delight, and I think I’m already halfway in love with the characters. It sounds like a lot of action and intrigue, sprinkled with romance and girl power. (And loads of magic, which is a plus!)

Defy the Fates by Claudia Gray

I feel like this sci-fi adventure is so underrated! It’s the story about an mech, or robot, and a human who has gone through a long journey from becoming his enemy, to friend, to something more. I really enjoy the character development and science fiction aspects this series has to offer, and I’m really excited for the last book of the trilogy. Hopefully it will have been worth the wait!

Serious Moonlight by Alex Bennett

Y’all know I ADORE Alex Bennett’s YA contemporaries, and this one is no different. I don’t even have to read the blurb, and I already know I’ll love it. The YA romcoms she writes always have the perfect teenager vibes, with a great dose of family relationships, friendships, and romantic progression woven into character growth. Plus, Asian model on the cover! Get that rep!!

Let us know what your most anticipated reads are! I’m trying to build up my 2019 TBR so I’m keen to check out what everyone else is reading!

  2. I’m definitely looking forward to King of Scars! I don’t think I ever finished the original Grisha series because it didn’t grip me in the same way the Six of Crows duology did, but I am definitely ready to see Nina again. I might do a skim of some summaries for Nikolai info (shame, I know, but heh heh ^^;).

Amie and Jay did such a good job on their last trilogy, I’m super excited for their next project. The cover is beautiful, but I don’t know much else about it.
