Jenna’s 2020 Life and Bookish Resolutions

January 9, 2020 by Jenna | Chatterbox, Features

Happy new year everyone! I can’t believe we’re in 2020, especially since it’s been a while since my last post. For my first post of the year, I’m going to do something incredibly unoriginal and write down 5 of my resolutions for the year. I’m hoping that writing them down will help me keep working hard at them!

1. Increase my cooking repertoire

I moved out of home permanently in 2019 and have been really good at having homecooked meals almost nightly. We’ve rarely eaten out or gotten takeaway and I’m quite proud of how dedicated we’ve been to cooking. I’m hoping to continue to do the same but improve my cooking skills and my repertoire of recipes in 2020. I intend to step outside of my comfort zone and try more complicated recipes, especially when it comes to baking.

2. Be a better plant mother

I’m a complete newbie to taking care of plants. Previously, I’ve pretty much exclusively had those cute self-watering plants where you just need to refill the glass of water every few weeks or so. Since getting my own place, I’ve been taking care of a few indoor plants (an orchid and an African violet) and they’ve been doing better than I expected. We’ve also been growing a Woolworths Discovery Garden and we’ve got a few that are growing quite well. In 2020, I’d like to learn more about plants (including how to properly take care of different plants) and obtain a few more indoor plants.

3. Read more widely and more regularly

I feel like I still haven’t been able to shake myself out of the reading slump that I’ve been in for the last 2-3 years. I think I’ve finally accepted that I’m no longer the person who used to be able to read 200+ books each year. For 2020, I’m content with reading as regularly as my schedule allows, particularly now that my work schedule is a nice 9-5. I’m hoping to set aside some time, at least 1-2 days a week, to sit down with a book and resist Netflix. I also want to read more widely this year than I have in the past 2 years. To do this, I want to spend more time browsing different sections at bookstores, which is something that I used to do often but have been doing less frequently in recent years.

4. Exercise

I absolutely hate exercise. The only kind of sport and exercise I enjoy is swimming but the pre-swimming and post-swimming routines (e.g. washing off, washing my hair, contorting to get my costume off) are a bit tedious to me. Now that I live in an apartment complex with a gym, I want to make better use of it, especially since it’s something I’m already paying for. I’ve just bought new shoes and hopefully will be hitting the gym a bit more often.

5. Get outside more

This is partly related to the exercise point but I’d also like to get out more and explore the area that I live in. There are so many little cool restaurants and cafes around where I live and it would be nice to get to know what’s in the local area. Having said that, with the smoky haze that’s currently in Sydney, it’s probably a bit hazardous to go outside.

What are your resolutions for 2020?

  1. Good luck with all your goals for this year.

I’ve long accepted the fact that I’m not the reader I once was, but I am trying to actively make the effort to make more time for reading, even if it’s just a couple of chapters before bed.

Exercise and getting outside more are two of my goals as well, especially now that I have my driving liscense so I can get out to see some local sites.

  2. Good luck on all of your goals.

I also haven’t been reading nearly as much over the past few years as I used to. In college, I read an exorbitant amount of books each year, especially because I was an English major and had to read many of them for school. (But even on top of that, I read a lot.) Since graduating and starting working full time, the amount I read as decreased by more than half, so I relate to your third goal a lot.

  3. Good luck with your goals! I think the plant one is really admirable. You’re already on your way, especially with an orchid! Those seem really intimidating to me. 😮
