Welcome to the Team, Bec!

April 10, 2020 by Jeann @ Happy Indulgence | Books, Co-Blogging

I hope that you’re all taking care of yourselves during COVID19 – so many changes with isolation, social distancing and food limits. I’m lucky enough to be working from home, although it’s harder not being able to go out and do what you normally do (for us, it’s going to the dog park, the shopping centre and definitely our favourite cafes)!

Since Jenna and I have been juggling work, mum duties (for me) and Animal Crossing (for Jenna), we have reduced our posts to once a week which is easier to maintain. However, during these pandemic times , I gotta admit I haven’t been the best blogger with everything else on my plate!

Exciting News Time

So it’s time for the exciting news – Bec will be joining the team at Happy Indulgence! It’s been about 4-5 years since we’ve had someone new join the team, and I’m so, so excited about this change. For those of you who have been in the blogosphere for a while, you may recognise her from the blog Readers in Wonderland. Since the blog isn’t online anymore, I invited her to join us knowing that we were going to work well together!

I’m hoping that having Bec on board will add some fresh new content to the mix with more posts for you to read. I know things might change when things return to normal as she does have a full time job as well, but in the meantime, we’ll see how it goes cos she’ll probably have too much fun ๐Ÿ˜‰

So that you can get to know her a bit better, I’m handing over to her to introduce herself and then we’ll launch into a Q&A:

Getting to Know Bec

Hi! I’m Bec. An Aussie bookworm who used to lurk around the blogosphere a fair bit, but work and study commitments forced me to step back a few years ago.

It’s really weird posting on a blog again after really not being around the community much for the last few years. But also really fun to be back! I’ve really missed blogging. I’m excited to be back! And so grateful to Jeann for allowing me to do some guest posting at Happy Indulgence! With any luck, life will be kind to me and my posts can be a fairly regular thing ๐Ÿ™‚ย

1. What are your favourite book genres?

Oh an easy question to start with. Fantasy, historical, and sci-fi are my usual go to genres. But I’m not one to turn down a good romance or contemporary novel.

2. What are your 3 most recommended books of all time?

And from easy, we go to a challenging question. I force a lot of books onto my friends. The ones I usually shove into their hands are Heart’s Blood by Juliet Marillier, the Witchlands series by Susan Dennard, and The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater.

3. Who are your favourite authors?

At least there’s no number attached to this one. In no particular order, I really enjoy Sarah J Maas, Maggie Stiefvater, Susan Dennard, Juliet Marillier, and Jay Kristoff. To name just a few.

4. What kind of posts can we expect to see on Happy Indulgence?

Over the past few years I’ve really come to enjoy writing list style posts. They’re fast to write, easy to read, and perfect for a lazy person like myself. So there’ll be plenty of list style recommendation posts in the future. Even my reviews I’ve started doing as pros & cons bullet point reviews. I hope you enjoy reading the content I bring to Happy Indulgence as much as I enjoy writing it!

5. What is your perfect reading spot?

Since I still mostly live at my family home or have only had temporary share-house living arrangements, my favourite place to read is my bed. It’s always been my bed. I need to be by myself with minimal distractions otherwise I can really struggle to get into a book (I like to binge read and it’s really annoying being disturbed by other humans for silly reasons). It’s much easier to shut people out from your own room rather than forbidding them to enter more communal areas of the house.

One day I’d love to have a dedicated library with a comfy reading chair or couch or something, but that’s a fair way away in the future. Plus I’ve become so conditioned to reading in a bed I don’t know how I’d handle a change of scenery!

6. What is your Hogwarts house?

Ravenclaw!

Though interestingly, when I took one of those random unofficial quizzes that gives you the percentage breakdown I was 50/50 Ravenclaw and Slytherin.

7. Slow reader or fast reader? How many books do you read a month?

I guess I’m technically a fast reader now? Since I average probably 20ish books a month at the moment. It varies a lot depending on how much free time I have, how addictive the particular books I’m reading are, and if I’m in the right mood for reading.

Honestly, I think I read at a pretty average speed. Right now I just have a lot of free time to read. It wasn’t that long ago I was lucky to finish a book a month.

8. What do you do outside of blogging and reading?

My life is pretty boring, so I don’t do all that much outside of reading. I ride horses and for the past few years have been working as an equine veterinarian in New Zealand (I’m between jobs at the moment, trying to decide what to do with my life). I enjoy a bit of gaming on my PS4, mostly fantasy RPGs but don’t mind some nice, face paced action games like uncharted (just don’t ask me to play any games which required you to shoot a gun without any aim assistance because I suck at those). I could say I watch some TV, but really that’s a lie because all my TV time is currently consumed with trying to catch up on episodes of Critical Role.

I also run a bookstagram account, @ booktineus. Does that count as blogging (since I do post book reviews there…)? Because I’m definitely going to give myself a shameless plug right here.

9. What have you missed the most about blogging?

This is going to sound really cliched, but honestly the blogging community is what I’ve missed the most. Fangirling about books, sharing recommendations with people all over the world. I never expected to miss it so much as I have. I mean, I talk to some of my best friends about books all the time (we have a couple of group chats dedicated just to our book discussions) but it’s just not the same.

10. Describe yourself in 3 words…

Quiet, awkward, nerdy…Can you tell I’m a massive socially anxious introvert?

I’m so excited to be back in the book blogging world again. I hope you enjoy everything I bring to Happy Indulgence!

WELCOME BEC!!! So excited to see your posts. I think it’s awesome that you work with horses too.

Also, omg, I love Heart’s Blood :’)) Just reading about your excitement makes me want to reread it, hehe. (Also if there was a sequel I would hop on that so fast.)
