September 19, 2015 by Jeann @ Happy Indulgence | Books, Features, Videos

Since my discussion post last week on being kind to myself, I’ve been taking it a little TOO easy and I forgot to put up my scheduled posts for this week! But never fear, I have a discussion video prepared on my Aussie YA recommendations.

In my video, I talk about why you should #LoveOZYA and recommend my Top 5 Aussie YA reads!

Books I discuss:

  • Mythology/Fantasy: Stormdancer & Kinslayer by Jay Kristoff
  • Sci-Fi Space: These Broken Stars (Review) & This Shattered World (Review) by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner – Reviews
  • Sci-Fi Dystopian: Disruption (Review), Corruption (Review) and Between the Lives (Review) by Jessica Shirvington
  • Thriller: Beautiful Malice (Review), Sweet Damage (Review) & Cooper Bartholomew is Dead (Review) by Rebecca James

Just to be clear… the Spark series is great….but Rachael is not an Aussie author. She comes from the great NZ… a separate country and not affiliated with Aussie.

  1. I LOVED These Broken Stars and still need to read TSL before the 3rd book comes out. I read Illuminae this summer, and that was fucking brilliant. And I so want to read more of Jay's books. I haven't read the other 3, but I've heard good things about Rachael Craw's series as well as Jessica Shirvington's Between the Lines.

One of my favorite books is The Book Thief. And I also LOVED Finnikin of the Rock and must read all the Melina Marchetta books now. Great post and video, Jeann!
My recent post Review: A History of Glitter and Blood

  2. I've only read two Aussie books. One is Graffiti Moon and the other is Stolen: A letter to a captor. I loved both books, and have come to a conclusion that you guys have amazing authors and books after peeking into your OzYa chats here and there despite being a non Aussie!:)
My recent post I turn 17 today! (Giveaway!!!!)

  3. DUDE YOU GUYS ARE HIDING AND NURTURING SO MANY AMAZING AUSSIE AUTHORS. I know for certain that Jay Kristoff is cool (ILLUMINAE) and Amie Kaufman is the bomb (THESE BROKEN STARS OMG OMG OMG THIS SHATTERED WORLD FEELS!!!) and Jessica Shirvington!!! Her Disruption book was amazingly good O_O And there are also a lot more aussie authors I'd love to try :(( Although it seems not all of their books are in the US market yet, and Philippines are "attuned" to US releases so >_> 🙁 🙁

Thanks for the recs! I definitely agree with These Broken Stars/This Shattered World, and I hope to read Spark/Stray at some point!

  5. Rachel Lightwood

I love Rebecca James' Cooper Bartholomew is Dead too and NEED to pick up her other books asap. Some of my fave Aussie authors are Michael Pryor (his Laws of Magic series is one of my top, TOP faves) and John Flanagan (his Ranger's Apprentice series I am currently devouring). But I haven't read a lot of these author's so I plan on picking a lot of these up soon. Thanks for the recs, Jeann!

    • I love her writing, it's so thrilling Rachel! So glad to hear you have some recs, I've heard a lot about the Ranger's Apprentice. NP, hope you enjoy!

  6. I LOVED Jessica Shirvington's One Past Midnight (or in Australia, Between the Lives!), and I basically had to move heaven and earth to get a copy of Disruption, because I know Cait begs everyone to read it, and I loved the other book. Now, as hard as Disruption was to find (seriously, it had to be shipped from New Zealand!), Corruption is even MORE impossible to find. And I want to read them both at once so… it's hard.

I also really want to read Claire Zorn's books. I have them on my Amazon wishlist 🙂 And I was going to say that I hadn't read any of Amie Kaufman OR Jay Kristoff, BUT alas, I can cross them off the list, for I am halfway done with Illuminae!

    • I thought that book was brilliant as well Shannon! So glad to hear you got the chance to get Disruption. I know what you mean, I hope it gets published overseas! Claire Zorn is so amazing. Yay with Illuminae! I hope you're enjoying it.

*bows head in shame* I've…never, ever read a book written by an Aussie author. But I promise that I will. I promise. Don't hate me. Teehee I'm loving the look of your videos and your beautiful books! I I
wish I was organized enough to actually organize them by color but *shrugs* and you're so right that we need MORE diversity in this booking world! Awesome video and again keep up the awesome work girl! 🙂
