All sorcerers are evil. Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything. Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer’s Great Libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcery—magical grimoires that whisper on shelves and rattle beneath iron chains. If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather. She hopes to become a warden, charged with protecting the kingdom from their power.

Then an act of sabotage releases the library’s most dangerous grimoire. Elisabeth’s desperate intervention implicates her in the crime, and she is torn from her home to face justice in the capital. With no one to turn to but her sworn enemy, the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn, and his mysterious demonic servant, she finds herself entangled in a centuries-old conspiracy. Not only could the Great Libraries go up in flames, but the world along with them.

As her alliance with Nathaniel grows stronger, Elisabeth starts to question everything she’s been taught—about sorcerers, about the libraries she loves, even about herself. For Elisabeth has a power she has never guessed, and a future she could never have imagined.

The Good Things

  • Such a unique world! (The grimoires! The libraries! The magic! Famous swords and demons!) I loved all of it.
  • Banter galore and just generally fantastic character dynamics and growth
  • That slow burn romance!
  • Easy to get into, even when I’d left it for a while. Weeks, honestly, because I kept getting distracted by real life. I never felt like I couldn’t follow the plot.
  • Really well paced and intriguing plot! It is on the slower side I suppose, but it suits the story.
  • It was a really comforting read and everything I want when I look for an easy, interesting fantasy novel.

The Not-So-Good Things

  • I really don’t have that many complaints. Well, aside from the fact that it ended and I had to leave the world of Austermeer. It was so interesting, can we please have more?
  • I really would have liked to learn more about the world and lore. It felt like we barely scratched the surface of it all. I’m quietly hoping for a companion novel of some variety because I do wish I could explore more of it.

A unique, standalone fantasy that I really enjoyed. I’ve never read anything like it. I’m sad we barely scratched the surface of the world, but I really hope we’ll get a companion novel or something in the future.

Bec is an Aussie blogger and reader who loves all types of novels. Fantasy, sci fi, and historical are my usual go-to genres. If I’m not binge reading, I’m usually gaming, trying to take decent photos for bookstagram, or freaking out about silly things.
