Jenna’s Top Books of 2020

December 30, 2020 by Jenna | Books

So this year has truly been an abysmal year for me in terms of reading. I didn’t think I could sink any lower but this year I only read 33 books… And needless to say, one of my goals for 2021 is to read A LOT more books. As a result of my terribly lazy reading year, my favourites list is a little bit small for 2020. There were only a handful of true standouts for this year so I’ve only listed 4 of my top reads for the year.

Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare

Chain of Gold was probably the standout read for me tonight and the first one I thought of when I was considering my favourites for the year. It’s no secret that I love The Infernal Devices and I was so excited to read about the next generation of the London Institute. I loved being back in the world and I really loved the characters. I can’t wait for Chain of Iron, which thankfully is not too far away.

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

The only thing I love more than books and food is a book about food. Not only is With the Fire on High beautifully diverse, with a wonderful underlying message, but I also highly enjoyed all of the food aspects. I still haven’t had a chance to read Clap When You Land but I’m extremely excited to check that one out because I really enjoyed Acevedo’s writing.

You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson

I listened to You Should See Me in a Crown on audio and absolutely loved it. I really connected with the main character and highly enjoyed her story. When reading the blurb, I didn’t really think that I would connect with the book, but found myself deeply enamoured by all aspects of it. It was an easy and uplifting read and a wonderful debut novel. I can’t wait for Leah Johnson’s next novel, which I think is coming out mid-2021.

Only Mostly Devastated by Sophie Gonzales

This was a surprise standout for me in 2020. I love contemporary so I knew that I would probably enjoy this one but I was completely unprepared for how much I would love it. Only Mostly Devastated is a spin on Grease and I loved the story so much. Ollie is one of my favourite characters that I’ve read about this year and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an adorable contemporary romance. It looks like Sophie Gonzales has some more YA contemporary romances coming so I’m super keen to check them out (not to mention, Sophie is Aussie and a psychologist :D)

I hope you’ve all had a great reading year in 2020 and that 2021 will bring some more delightful reads. Let us know what your favourite reads of the year have been.

From Jeann, Bec and I, we wish you a happy new year! We wish you happiness and good health in 2021.

Quality over quantity, as they say. I read a crazy amount, but my average rating went down…

I still need to read Chain of Gold!! I want to do a TID reread first (i’ve been meaning to reread that series for a while).
