The elves come for two things: war and wives. In both cases, they come for death.

Three-thousand years ago, humans were hunted by powerful races with wild magic until the treaty was formed. Now, for centuries, the elves have taken a young woman from Luella's village to be their Human Queen.

To be chosen is seen as a mark of death by the townsfolk. A mark nineteen-year-old Luella is grateful to have escaped as a girl. Instead, she's dedicated her life to studying herbology and becoming the town's only healer.

That is, until the Elf King unexpectedly arrives... for her.

Everything Luella had thought she'd known about her life, and herself, was a lie. Taken to a land filled with wild magic, Luella is forced to be the new queen to a cold yet blisteringly handsome Elf King. Once there, she learns about a dying world that only she can save.

The magical land of Midscape pulls on one corner of her heart, her home and people tug on another... but what will truly break her is a passion she never wanted.

The Good Things

  • This was such a nice fun read. I’m smiling like a goon after finishing it. It’s a lovely book.
  • Standalone NA fantasy. Little bit of inspiration from Persephone and Hades. Sweet slowburn romance.
  • Luella is a healer/ herbalist! One of my favourite types of MCs. I loved her personality. She’s kind and caring, but also has a strong backbone and sass.
  • Eldas! He tries to be scary but he’s just an awkward cinnamon roll trying to do the right thing on the inside. It was so cute watching him come out of his shell.
  • HOOK THE FADE WOLF COMPANION! The Bestest Mystifying Boi. He had the best comedic timing.
  • First person present tense writing that flowed so well! It was super easy and relaxing to read.
  • Love the world and lore! I’m excited for the companion novels to explore some of the other Midscape creatures.

The Not-So-Good Thing

  • I don’t really have anything negative to say? It was such a nice read.
  • The last bit of the romance felt a little rushed but not so much that it really bothered me.
  • The plot and world wasn’t overly deep, but again that was okay because it did what it needed to and wasn’t meant to be that type of book.
  • So like I said, no real complaints.

This book was so nice, I really have no complaints. It’s the perfect light hearted fantasy romance to read this time of year (or any time of year, let’s be honest). It was just so lovely. I’m excited to explore more of this world in the companion novels (and hope we get some cameos from these characters too!).

Bec is an Aussie blogger and reader who loves all types of novels. Fantasy, sci fi, and historical are my usual go-to genres. If I’m not binge reading, I’m usually gaming, trying to take decent photos for bookstagram, or freaking out about silly things.
