After spending the summer away from each other, Titus and Iolanthe (still disguised as Archer Fairfax) are eager to return to Eton College to resume their training to fight the Bane. Although no longer bound to Titus by a blood oath, Iolanthe is more committed than ever to fulfilling her destiny—especially with the agents of Atlantis quickly closing in.

Soon after arriving at school, though, Titus makes a shocking discovery, one that makes him question everything he previously believed about their mission. Faced with this devastating realization, Iolanthe is forced to come to terms with her new role, while Titus must choose between following his mother's prophecies—and forging a divergent path to an unknowable future.

The Good Things:

  • The second book in Sherry Thomas’s YA historical fantasy series, The Elemental Trilogy, and a fantastic sequel. There are so many things I want to gush about.
  • What I’m most pleased about is the fact that The Perilous Sea actually did an amnesia plotline well! I’m usually frustrated when an amnesia trope is introduced midway through a series because it can feel like a convenient plot device to add conflict. But The Perilous Sea uses it in a way that really adds to the suspense!
  • I loved that some of the side characters from The Burning Sky are becoming more important! And in interesting and twisty ways.
  • Not only did we get more characters, but we got to see a lot more of the wider mage world! I can’t wait to see even more of it in book three.
  • There were so many great plot twist moments that made you question everything! I loved all the revelations.
  • The romance has grown on me! There was more angst, but also more sweet moments and  some great banter.
  • The ending was so intense! It’s a cliffhanger, but a good one that made me glad I have book three ready to go.

The Not-So-Good Things

  • I got so swept up in this book, I can’t think of many negative things to say.
  • A few people may struggle with the writing, especially if you’re not really a fan of historical fiction.
  • The only other negative is that I wanted more magic and pages.

I loved this sequel so much! There were so many fantastic twists and turns, and it managed to use one of my least-favourite tropes in a way that I loved! I’m so excited to jump into the final book because I fully expect more epic elemental magic awakes.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5
