Nine Underrated YA Releases In 2018

April 13, 2018 by Aila J. | Books, Chatterbox, Features

Hello everyone!

I can’t believe it’s already April, 2018. This year has gone so slow, yet so fast. I feel like the days are crawling by but then when I look back, so much has happened! As I approach the end of my school semester (my last exam is May 8 – a bit less than a month away), a LOT of things are going on. This includes both extracurricular activities and schoolwork/projects/essays. However, I am slowly and steadily surviving, and also sending energy your way to make the most out of the rest of the first part of the year!

For this month’s discussion post, I wanted to highlight some pretty underrated Young Adult releases for 2018 that haven’t been talked about much. We’re going to be featuring 9 books (coincidentally, the number of months left in this year as well).

I base a lot of my book recommendations on social media – especially Instagram and Twitter – so these will be books that I think need more hype on those platforms!

Tyler Johnson Was Here by Jay Coles

I didn’t see much hype when this book was released last week except for a couple of release day blitzes. But I feel like it’s definitely going to be a game changer. Advertised as a cross between THUG and All-American BoysTyler Johnson Was Here just sounds so real and raw and reflective of modern society. And reading one book like THUG shouldn’t be the end of all the resistance narratives in YA – it should only be the beginning.

Mirage by Somaiya Daud

This Moroccan-inspired fantasy was a BLAST to read – and more people should know about it! Think: rebellion fantasy sent in space. The action is heart-pounding, and the characters never have a dull moment. I’m definitely read for the next book!

The Beauty That Remains by Ashley Woodfolk

I have heard nothing but amazing things from people who have read this diverse contemporary story, but hardly anything else about it. The story sounds poignant and heart-breaking and real, and what else can you want from a contemporary?

Since hearing about this book a few months ago (where I interviewed Lynette Noni), I’ve been super keen on picking it up! It sounds like a fascinating sci-fi/dystopian with an unreliable narrator, totally different to what she’s written before. I can’t wait to read it! Release date: April 24, 2018 by Pantera Press.
Okay, this doesn’t exactly fit the brief with being under the radar, but I just had to take the opportunity to say this is CAIT AT PAPER FURY’S first book! It’s about music, abuse and crawling out of grief and depression and it sounds amazing. Release date: June 7, 2018 by Orchard Books.
A search and rescue mission set on another planet where the crew arrives on an abandoned site? Oh goody, you know I love my sci-fis and this one is one that I’m excited to read (especially after reading and loving Vengeance Road). Release date: July 24, 2018 by HarperTeen.

I haven’t really been keeping up with social media and 2018 releases but here are some that I’m super excited for and haven’t really heard much about.

Invisible Ghosts by Robyn Schneider

I have already had the pleasure of reading this one and man was it good! I’ve loved all of Robyn Schneider’s books so far – you just can’t go wrong with one of her novels! Invisible Ghosts is about family, grief and letting go.

I Have Lost My Way by Gayle Forman

This novel has already been released and I have my preorder of it sitting on my desk right now. I don’t know ANYTHING about the story but I had to preorder it straight away because Gayle Forman is one of my favourite contemporary authors. Her Just One Day duology is one of my favourite YA series of all time.

The Towering Sky by Katharine McGee

I have to admit that I haven’t had the chance to read The Dazzling Heights yet but I adored The Thousandth Floor sooooo much. The world is fantastically sci-fi and I love the multiple perspectives in the novels. And can we talk about The Towering Sky cover for a second?!! It’s so beautiful and I just can’t wait to have it in my hands!

I hope we’ve been able to add some books to your TBR’s! What are some underrated 2018 releases that you think need some more love?

  1. I’m going to have to give a shout to Anger is a Gift by Mark Oshiro. I used to read his Mark Reads series back from it’s very earliest days – Mark Reads Twilight and the delightful Mark Reads Harry Potter.

  2. Wow, I have so many books to read, and you guys definitely just made me want to read a LOT of these sooner hahah. I had no idea that Robyn Schneider had a new book, added that to my TBR! I want to read literally all of these, I kid you not! I have only pre-ordered Cait’s book (because of course) but I have Whisper (yay!), The Beauty That Remains (also yay!) and Contagion (more yay!) so I hope to get to them all ASAP. The rest… I still need to obtain! And Aila, you made me want to push up The Thousandth Floor SO soon too! And I may cave and request Mirage hahah. FABULOUS list, ladies!!

OH and to answer your question… Fatal Throne is the first one that comes to mind, I loved it but barely anyone seems to have heard of it!

  3. Aila–I’m SOOO excited for all the releases you chose, especially Mirage. I sent an email to the publisher about it, and I think I should be seeing a review copy soon AHHHH I CAN’T WAIT!

Jeann–I didn’t know that Contagion was written by Erin Bowman! I read Vengeance Road and enjoyed it a lot, too, so I’m pretty excited about this one.

Jenna–I’m actually surprised that there isn’t a lot of talk about Invisible Ghosts. Before my blogging hiatus, I heard so many amazing things about this author!
