In the final book in the New York Times bestselling Ruined series, the romance of The Selection and the epic stakes of Red Queen come together in a story of revenge, adventure, and unexpected love.

Emelina Flores and her sister, Olivia, were determined to bring peace to the people of Ruina. But as the war for liberation raged on, what triumph and freedom meant to Em and Olivia slowly changed. As Olivia’s violence and thirst for vengeance became her only ambition, Em was left to pick up the pieces.

But it’s not only Em who is upset by Olivia’s increased violence. Other members of the Ruined army are beginning to see the cracks, and soon a small group of them defects from Olivia’s army and joins Em instead. The two sisters are soon pitted against each other in an epic battle for the kingdom and the future, and only one will win.

The Good Things

  • Solid ending to a good YA fantasy trilogy.
  • The pace was slower in this one compared to the first two, but I don’t think that was detrimental.
  • The plot in this one was more focused on negotiations and wrapping things up rather than endless action and espionage.
  • Loved that Galo and Iria were added to the point of view characters! They’re wonderful characters I loved getting a deeper look at.
  • I couldn’t stop reading! So my notes a pretty scarce haha
  • I really enjoyed everything in it overall. All the major events were wrapped up nicely and it was a good ending for the story.

The Not-So-Good Things

  • I’m a bit disappointed by Olivia as a villain. She’s a terrible person and does horrible things, but she’s so extremely on the evil side of the scale it makes her come across as shallow. Her immense power, desire for revenge, and hatred of humans seem to be all she is.
  • I still have some questions about the history and origins of the Ruined. While not necessary for the plot, they’re the type of world details I love in a fantasy.
  • I wish we got more Violet and August! They were the only two secondary characters I feel could have been fleshed out more.

Allied was a solid ending to a good YA trilogy. While slower, I loved everything about it, especially the new point of views added to the story.

Bec is an Aussie blogger and reader who loves all types of novels. Fantasy, sci fi, and historical are my usual go-to genres. If I’m not binge reading, I’m usually gaming, trying to take decent photos for bookstagram, or freaking out about silly things.
